COLUMBUS, Ohio – Members of the Ohio State men’s volleyball team and Team USA captured gold at the 2012 NORCECA Men’s Junior Continental Championship Saturday in Colorado Springs. Playing for the United States was sophomore Michael Henchy and incoming freshman Driss Guessous, while head coach Pete Hanson served as head coach for the team and volunteer assistant coach Jake Schick was Team USA’s statistician.
The NORCECA Men’s Junior Continental Championship is a tournament held biannually and organized by the North America, Central America and Caribbean Volleyball Federation. The United States, the tournament’s defending champion, went undefeated in the tournament with a 5-0 record.
Team USA won Pool A Wednesday, defeating Mexico in three sets (25-18, 25-18, 25-20). Henchy played in two sets and finished with four kills, one block and one service ace. The squad advanced to the championship match with a 3-0 (25-15, 25-16, 25-20) win over Puerto Rico in the semifinals Friday. Henchy came off the bench in the third set.
The team captured the tournament title with a 3-1 (26-24, 25-17, 23-25, 25-21) win over Canada, marking Team USA’s second-straight tournament crown. Henchy played in the third and fourth sets and tallied two service aces in the win.
