Athletics Communications intern Maddy Humphrey is venturing around campus this summer, checking in on some of her Bucks Go Pro peers and sharing their internship story. This week is a member of the NCAA championship-winning men's volleyball team Blake Leeson.
Leeson, interning with Athletic Administration, is a senior Buckeye from Mequon, Wisconsin, and is a double major in sport industry and marketing. The Athletic Administration Department is located in the Fawcett Center, across the street from the Woody Hayes Athletic Center. Janine Oman, Leeson's supervisor, is a Senior Associate Athletic Director (AD) for Student Services and Sport Administration. She also happens to be Leeson's AD for the men's volleyball team.
Leeson voiced his excitement for his internship, especially under Oman, "I love working with Janine Oman. She has been extremely helpful and it is really nice having her as my mentor since she is my sport's AD. I knew her fairly well before I was involved with Bucks Go Pro which has made the transition really smooth."
After a full week completed on the job, Leeson has already gained knowledge at his specific internship location in Athletics Administration. It is week two for Leeson, and so far has been in charge of handling the student-athlete handbook for the 2017-2018 school year. This handbook is around 80-90 pages and requires a lot of updating by the Athletic Administration Department. Leeson has to contact the various departments involved with student-athletes and make sure content is up to date and consistent with current expectations of student-athletes. If the handbook content is not up to date he can work with his supervisor, Oman, to see what changes need to be made or what to replace the old content with.
Other than the handbook he has had the opportunity to sit in on a few meetings and see the inner workings of the athletic department. There are many behind the scenes meetings and planning that go into every aspect of the Athletic Department, and Leeson is jumping into every opportunity he can get to gain experience in an Administration setting.
Leeson expresses his viewpoint on his new role interning with Administration, "I really want to fully understand the ins and outs of being an AD in a large university such as Ohio State. I want to be able to know at the end of the eight weeks if I could see myself down the road doing this as a career path. Additionally I would like to interact with and meet a bunch of people to improve my networking skills."
Leeson is a redshirt junior, that has started all games that he has played in, and his position is a middle blocker. Last year, Leeson had 117 total blocks, 24 solo and 94 assisted, which was the team high. In his career, he also totaled 322 kills and averages 1.36 per set. Leeson has been a member of both the 2016 and 2017 NCAA All-Tournament teams.
