COLUMBUS, Ohio - Four members of the No. 11 Ohio State men's volleyball team earned All-MIVA honors, the league announced Wednesday. Sophomores Brennan Anderson and Michael Henchy were placed on the MIVA All-Conference First Team, while redshirt sophomore Andrew Lutz and redshirt senior John Tholen were honored on the second team.
Anderson led the MIVA in digs, averaging 3.12 this season. The libero totaled 150 digs in conference play and notched seven double-digit dig performances against league opponents. Anderson had three matches with 15 digs or more, including a 24-dig performance against IPFW in February. The honor is the first for the Newport Beach, Calif., product.
The All-MIVA First Team honor is the first for Henchy. The outside hitter was among the league's best in hitting percentage, finishing with a .309 against the conference. The Ventura, Calif., native was second on the team with a 2.93 kills average in MIVA play and finished with a 3.44 points per set average. Henchy totaled five matches in double-digit kills.
Lutz, an opposite from North Reading, Mass., picked up the first postseason honor of his career after being named to the All-MIVA Second Team. He finished second in the conference with a 3.74 kills average against MIVA foes, totaling 172 over 46 sets played. Lutz had a team-best 11 matches with double-digit kills, including a pair of double-doubles against Ball State (17k, 12d) and Loyola-Chicago (14k, 10d).
The All-MIVA Second Team honor is the second straight for Tholen. The middle blocker from Hilliard, Ohio, averaged .98 blocks per set and finished with 47 on the season against the league. He finished with a 1.71 kills average and had a team-best .462 hitting percentage versus MIVA opponents.
The 2013 MIVA Tournament begins Friday with No. 2 seed Loyola-Chicago hosting No. 7 seed Quincy in a quarterfinal match. On Saturday, No. 3 seed Ball State will host No. 6 seed IPFW while No. 4 seed Ohio State is set to host No. 5 seed Grand Canyon for the other two quarterfinal matches.
The quarterfinal winners will advance to the semifinals on Wednesday, April 24. No. 1 seed Lewis will host and await the winner between Ohio State and Grand Canyon. The other two quarterfinal winners will play at the site of the higher remaining seed.
The tournament championship match will be played Saturday, April 27, at the site of the highest remaining seed. The winner of the MIVA Tournament will earn the league's automatic bid into the 2013 NCAA Men's Volleyball Championships held at Pauley Pavilion in Los Angeles, Calif. The two semifinal matches will be played on May 2 before the finals are set to be played on May 4.
