Piechowski, Sangrey Earn MIVA Weekly Honors

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Shawn Sangrey and Michael Piechowski were honored by the MIVA this week for their performances on the court this past weekend. Sangrey was named Co-Offensive Player of the Week, while Piechowski was named Defensive Player of the Week. The honor is the fifth of the season for Sangrey, while it's the first for Piechowski.
Sangrey celebrated his senior night Friday with a dominating offensive performance vs. MIVA opponent IPFW in Columbus. The Columbia, Pa., product led the Buckeyes to a 3-1 win over the Mastodons that sealed a share of the MIVA regular season title and the No. 1 seed in the MIVA Tournament.
In the match, Sangrey tallied his third 30-kill performance of the season, totaling 31 kills over four sets played for a 7.75 kills per set average. He also added 12 digs in the match for his third straight double-double and seventh overall this season. Sangrey had three service aces and one block assist for the Buckeyes. He averaged 8.62 points per set in the win.
With the stellar performance, Sangrey's season totals improve to 4.97 kills per set and 5.61 points per set. Both averages rank first nationally.
Piechowski, a sophomore libero, had a solid weekend for the Buckeyes defensively, helping limit the team's opponents to a .188 attack percentage over seven sets played. In the team's four-set win over IPFW Friday evening, Piechowski notched a team-best 15 digs. That mark was a career-high for the Los Angeles product.
On Sunday, Piechowski had another double-digit dig performance and finished with 12 digs in the win at George Mason. Piechowski and the Buckeye defense limited the Patriots to just a .167 attack percentage.
Piechowski was also perfect in service reception as he successfully passed all 47 attempts. He led all Buckeyes with a 3.86 digs per set average on the weekend and upped his season average to 1.26.
Ohio State earned the No. 1 seed in the 2012 MIVA Tournament and will host the winner of the No. 4 Grand Canyon/No. 5 Ball State match next week, April 25, in St. John Arena.
