IN THE POLLS
Ohio State enters the weekend as the No. 10 team in the AVCA Division I-II Men's Top 15 poll, moving up a spot from last week's season-opening poll. Conference foe Lewis is ranked No. 13, while Loyola-Chicago is receiving votes.
The Hawai'i Warriors enter the weekend with a 0-2 overall record after dropping a pair of matches to No. 2 BYU in Provo, Utah, Jan. 4-5. BYU topped Hawai'i 3-0 Friday and followed with a 3-1 win over the Warriors Saturday.
Sophomore JP Marks leads the squad with a 3.00 kills per set average, while junior Jace Olsen is averaging 2.14 per set. Junior setter Max Wechsung has a team-high 62 assists for an 8.86 average and junior Nick West has eight blocks over seven sets played for a 1.14 average.
The meeting is the fourth between the two squads. Hawai'i is 3-0 overall and have swept the Buckeyes in all three meetings. The teams have never met outside the Outrigger Invitational.
The Bruins travel to Hawai'i as the fifth-ranked team nationally and are 3-1 overall with wins against UC Santa Barbara, UC San Diego and Cal State Northridge.
Junior Robert Page leads the team with a 3.67 kills per set average and 55 kills on the season. Classmates Gonzalo Quiroga and Dane Worley are averaging 2.94 and 2.77 kills, respectively. Libero Evan Mottram has a team-high 47 digs, while Spence Rowe and Clayton Paullin have 11 blocks each.
UCLA holds a commanding 15-1 series record over the Buckeyes. The two teams met last season at the UC Santa Barbara Invitational with the Bruins taking a 3-0 victory. Ohio State's lone win over UCLA came in 2006 at the Outrigger Invitational.
The No. 7 Penn State Nittany Lions open their 2013 season this weekend at the Outrigger Invitational. The squad is under the direction of 19th-year head coach Mark Pavlik.
The squad returns 10 letterwinners from last year's squad, including six returners with starting experience. Key returners include redshirt sophomore Connor Curry, sophomore Aaron Russell, redshirt sophomore Nick Goodell and senior Nick Turko.
The Nittany Lions are 67-32-1 overall against Ohio State dating back to 1971. The two squads met twice last season. Penn State captured a 3-0 win in Columbus (Jan. 14) before taking a 3-2 victory over the Buckeyes at home on March 3.
