Buckeyes Fall to No. 14 IPFW in MIVA Quarterfinals

FORT WAYNE, Ind. -The Ohio State men's volleyball team dropped its MIVA Quarterfinals match at No. 14 IPFW. The Mastodons (21-6) seized a pair of tight sets to open the night before pulling away a bit in the third frame (25-23, 25-22, 25-19). Ohio State ends the season with a record of 11-16.
Redshirt junior Andrew Lutz and freshman Myles Johnson paced the Buckeyes with a dozen kills each. Johnson attached at a .375 clip (12-3-24) while Lutz posted a hitting efficiency of .250 (12-5-28). Freshman Driss Guessous was the most efficient Buckeye weapon, putting away six of 13 swings with no errors (.462). The MIVA Freshman of the Year got in on two blocks as well, one of five Buckeyes to tally a pair of blocks. Senior Michael Piechowski went out as the Buckeyes' digs leader by picking up 10 balls Saturday night.
The opening set was a track meet as both offenses were firing at a high level. Ohio State terminated 16 kills and hit .375, but the Mastadons countered with a .441 attacking percentage powered by 17 kills. Despite six put-aways from Lutz in the set, IPFW snuck by with a 25-23 triumph.
IPFW then maintained its torrent pace in the second stanza with a .429 efficiency while the Buckeyes attack rate dipped to .231. Johnson pounded the hardwood five times in the set before ultimately falling 25-22.
Ohio State got in front 9-6 to begin the third frame. The Mastadons surged back with a four-point run, however, to take the lead for good en route to a 25-19 match clincher.
