COLUMBUS, Ohio - The No. 12 Ohio State men's volleyball team defeated Quincy, 3-0 (25-14, 25-16, 25-15), in a MIVA match Friday night in St. John Arena. The win moved the Buckeyes to 18-7 overall and 8-5 in the league.
Redshirt sophomore Andrew Lutz finished with eight kills and added a career-high six service aces in the win for Ohio State. Redshirt senior John Tholen totaled six kills and had three blocks, while Michael Henchy finished with three kills, a service ace and three blocks (2s, 1a). Senior setter Kyle Lawrence had a team-best 15 assists.
Steven Battaglia led the Hawks (10-19, 1-12) with seven kills and three blocks, while John Pranger finished with five kills. Setter Chris Lynch totaled 19 assists and two block assists for the squad.
The first set opened with a 5-3 Ohio State run highlighted by a Henchy service ace. A kill by Tholen forced Quincy to call a timeout at 10-7 Ohio State. The Hawks tied it at 10-all before 5-1 run pushed the Buckeyes a head at 15-11. Errors plagued Quincy as the Buckeyes closed out the set on a 9-1 run to win 25-14.
Down early in the set two, Ohio State took an early timeout after falling behind 8-3. The Buckeyes responded and tied score 10-all with back-to-back kills from Lutz. An 8-1 Ohio State run that included a Nick Gibson service ace and two straight kills by Henchy forced Quincy to call a timeout at 19-11. The Buckeyes finished on a 7-5 run to take set 25-16.
The Buckeyes captured an early 11-3 lead in the third set, highlighted by five service aces from Lutz. Four straight Ohio State errors brought Quincy with in four at 11-7 before a kill by Shawn Herron sent Ohio State on run for a 14-7 lead. Ohio State won set three 25-15, to take match 3-0.
The two teams return to St. John Arena Saturday for another 7 p.m. ET match. The Buckeyes will honor its seven seniors prior to the match and admission is free.
