COLUMBUS, Ohio - The No. 11 Ohio State men's volleyball team earned a 3-0 (25-15, 25-23, 25-17) win over Mount Olive of Conference Carolinas Friday night in St. John Arena.
Sophomore Michael Henchy totaled a match-high 17 kills and added four digs to lead the Buckeyes (16-5). Redshirt sophomore Andrew Lutz had nine kills, while redshirt senior John Tholen finished with eight. Lutz and Tholen totaled four blocks apiece, while senior Nick Gibson finished with three.
Mount Olive (21-5) was led by Angel Dache with 12 kills and three blocks. Adam Mircle had seven kills and setter Quaid Marin totaled 30 assists.
The Buckeyes began the first set with an early 9-3 run triggered by a kill from Shawn Herron, forcing a Mount Olive timeout. The Trojans responded with a 4-1 run to cut the Ohio State lead to 10-7. Back-to-back Buckeye kills by Tholen and Henchy sent the squad on 8-3 run for a 20-11 advantage. A block by Gibson/Tholen/Lutz gave the Buckeyes match point and a service ace from Gibson gave Ohio State the first set, 25-15.
Down early in the second, a kill from Henchy sent Ohio State on a 6-2 run to take its first lead of the set at 8-6. The Trojans answered with a kill from Dache followed by a Buckeye attack error to tie score at eight. The Buckeyes pushed a head at 11-8 and held on to their three-point lead throughout the middle of the set. After a Mount Olive timeout at 20-16, the Trojans battled back to tie the score at 23 apiece. The Buckeyes, however, held and took second set, 25-23.
Tied at five apiece in set three, a pair of Mount Olive errors sent Ohio State on a 4-2 run to make score 11-7. Up 17-12, Lutz and Tholen kills led to a 22-12 Buckeye advantage. The Trojans attempted to make a comeback with a 5-2 run, but a kill by Henchy sealed the 25-17 victory.
The Buckeyes return to St. John Arena Saturday with a 7 p.m. ET match vs. Lees-McRae. Admission is free.
