Comeback Falls Short in 3-2 Loss to Harvard

COLUMBUS, Ohio - After falling behind 2-0, the No. 15 Ohio State men's volleyball team battled back to force a fifth set, but the comeback wasn't enough as the team dropped a 3-2 (25-15, 25-19, 20-25, 21-25, 17-15) match to Harvard Tuesday night in St. John Arena.

Redshirt freshmen Driss Guessous and Alex Judkins reached career bests in the match for the Buckeyes (8-12). Guessous had a match-high 18 kills to set a new career mark, while Judkins totaled a career-high 13 kills and eight digs. Freshman Miles Johnson tied a career-best with 16 kills and added six digs.

Freshman setter Christy Blough finished with a match-best 59 assists and had two service aces. Junior Michael Henchy totaled 14 kills and classmate Dustan Neary had a team-high five blocks (1s, 4a).

DJ White led Harvard (11-6) with 13 kills and 10 digs, while Kyle Rehkemper finished with 12 kills and five blocks (1s, 4a). Casey White and Nick Madden totaled 11 kills each and middle blocker Caleb Zimmick had a match-best six blocks (2s, 4a).

The Crimson kicked off set one with a 10-3 lead and pushed ahead for a 19-9 advantage. Harvard went on to capture the set with a 25-15 win.


 

 

Locked at six in the second, a pair of two-point runs by Harvard led to a 10-8 advantage. The Crimson followed with a 9-2 rally to push ahead at 20-11. The Buckeyes found life late in the set when a kill by Johnson triggered a 7-1 run to bring the score 22-19 Harvard. The Crimson, however, held to take the set 25-19.

Ohio State regrouped after the break and came out with a 7-2 lead to start the third set. Crimson errors followed by kills from Guessous and Judkins led to an 11-5 advantage, while a pair of kills from both Henchy and Judkins lifted the squad to a 16-10 lead. Harvard used a four-point rally to come within two at 16-14, but the Buckeyes held on for a 25-20 win.

Set four opened with Harvard capturing a 5-2 advantage. The two teams exchanged points throughout the early part of the set until kills by Guessous and Judkins locked the set at 12 apiece. Another Guessous/Judkins kill sequence pushed Ohio State ahead at 19-18 to force a Crimson timeout. A Guessous kill sent the Buckeyes on a 4-0 run highlighted by a trio of Ohio State blocks to bring the team to a 23-19 lead and a kill from Neary forced a fifth set, 25-21.

After taking a 4-3 lead in the fifth, the Buckeyes gave up a 4-1 run to Harvard to give the visiting team a 7-5 advantage. A 4-0 Crimson rally pushed Harvard to a 12-8 lead, causing Ohio State to use a timeout. The Buckeyes regrouped and put together 5-1 run to lock the set at 14. After exchanging points, Harvard was able to seal the match with a 17-15 win.

The Buckeyes travel to MIVA rival Ball State, March 23, for a 4 p.m. ET match. The meeting will be the last regular season meeting between the two teams.
