PHOENIX, Ariz. - The No. 9 Ohio State men's volleyball closed out its series at Grand Canyon with another 3-0 (25-21, 25-14, 25-15) sweep of the Antelopes Saturday night in Phoenix.
Senior Chen Levitan led the Buckeyes (14-3, 7-1 MIVA) with 15 kills and added three block assists in the win. Redshirt sophomore Andrew Lutz totaled 10 kills, while sophomore Michael Henchy had eight. Seniors Grayson Overman and John Tholen totaled three blocks apiece, while sophomore libero Brennan Anderson had a match-high nine digs.
Ben Ponnet and Ryan Mather each had seven kills for Grand Canyon (12-9, 5-5 MIVA), while Erik Jansen finished with five. Mather and Ben Hunt had five block assists apiece and three Antelopes totaled four digs.
A 4-0 Buckeye run led to a 4-2 lead to start the first and kills from Lutz and Levitan gave Ohio State a 6-4 advantage. GCU battled back to tie the set at 10 apiece, but a kill by Lutz triggered a 7-2 Buckeye run for an 18-14 lead. A pair of Lutz kills sealed the set for the Buckeyes, 25-21.
Ohio State kicked off set two on a 9-2 run and pushed ahead for a 14-5 lead. An Overman kill sent the squad on a 4-0 run to set the score 18-6. Kills from Levitan and Lutz gave the Buckeyes a 23-11 lead and a kill by Henchy closed out the set with a 25-14 win.
The Buckeyes carried their momentum into the third and took a quick 4-0 lead. Grand Canyon inched back into the set and tied the score at eight apiece, but Ohio State didn't waiver and a kill from Henchy sent the team on an 8-0 run for an 18-10 lead. The Buckeyes went on to take the match with a 25-15 win.
Ohio State returns to St. John Arena to host non-conference rival Penn State March 16. The Buckeyes and nationally-ranked Nittany Lions will face off in 7 p.m. ET match and admission is free.
