COLUMBUS, Ohio - The No. 6 Ohio State men's volleyball team hosted NCAA Div. III's Juniata Friday evening and came away with a 3-0 (25-12, 25-22, 25-19) sweep in St. John Arena. The Buckeyes improved to 11-2 on the season with the win.
Senior Chen Levitan led the match with 15 kills and finished with a career-high two service aces. Sophomore Michael Henchy had 12 kills and added three block assists, while senior Nick Gibson totaled eight kills and a match-high five blocks (3s, 2a). Gibson's block totaled tied a career high and his three solo blocks set a career best. Sophomore libero Brennan Anderson led the match with 10 digs.
Ross Madden led Juniata (11-4) with seven kills and added two blocks. Setter Rob Strauss finished with 20 assists and Justin Waldorf had four digs.
Ohio State opened the first set on a 6-0 run and followed with a 6-1 run to take a quick 14-3 lead. The Eagles put together a pair of two-point rallies to cut the Buckeye lead to nine at 20-11. However, back-to-back kills from Levitan led to a 25-12 win.
Buckeyes tied set two at five apiece and took the lead at 8-6 on a run highlighted by three kills from Henchy. Juniata battled back to tie the set at 12, but a kill from Overman sent the Buckeyes on a 4-0 run for a 16-13 advantage. A kill by Henchy gave Ohio State set point and a Henchy service ace sealed a 25-22 set win.
The third set opened with an Ohio State 5-1 run and two Eagle errors gave the Buckeyes a six point lead, 9-3. A kill by Levitan sent the Buckeyes on a 5-1 run to 15-7 lead. With a 20-16 advantage, kills from Overman and another by Jonathan Newton led to a 23-1 lead and back-to-back kills from Gibson gave the Buckeyes a 25-19 win.
Ohio State continues its homestand next weekend, facing MIVA rivals Loyola-Chicago and No. 12 Lewis in a pair of highly-anticipated league matches. The Buckeyes host the Ramblers in a 7 p.m. ET match March 1 and follow with another 7 p.m. ET match against the Flyers March 2. Both matches will be played in St. John Arena and admission is free.
