No. 15 Ohio State Falls at No. 1 Loyola, 3-0

CHICAGO - The No. 15 Ohio State men's volleyball team dropped a 3-0 (15-25, 20-25, 23-25) MIVA match at No. 1 Loyola Saturday in Chicago.
The Buckeyes (4-4, 2-1) were led by junior Michael Henchy with 10 kills, adding two service aces and two blocks. Redshirt freshman Driss Guessous had six kills and hit .556 (6-1-9) for Ohio State, while redshirt junior Andrew Lutz chipped in five kills and two service aces. Redshirt junior Peter Heinen led the team with 20 assists and libero Danny Baker had six digs.
Loyola (7-1, 1-0) senior Joe Smalzer had a match-high 17 kills and five service aces. Thomas Jaeschke finished with 10 kills and 10 digs, while Cody Caldwell had 13 kills. Setter Peter Hutz totaled 37 assists for the Ramblers.
After falling behind early in set one, the Buckeyes used a three-point rally to take a 9-7 advantage. The Ramblers locked the set at 10 and then used an 8-0 run to move ahead 18-12. A pair of two-point Loyola runs set the score 22-13 and the home team captured set one, 25-15.
A kill from Henchy triggered a 4-0 Buckeye run that led to a 9-6 lead to start the second set. The Ramblers responded and moved ahead at 14-12. With Loyola leading 19-14, a Lutz kill followed by a solo block from Shawn Herron cut the Rambler lead to three at 19-16 and a Lutz/Herron block forced a Loyola timeout at 20-18. The Ramblers regrouped and went on to take the set, 25-20.
Locked in two in the third set, an Ohio State run pushed the Buckeyes ahead at 6-2. Rambler errors followed by a Lutz kill set the score at 9-6 before Loyola responded to tie it up at 11. A Henchy kill sent the Buckeyes on a 4-1 run to jump out to a 16-13 advantage, but the Ramblers once again battled back and grabbed a 19-17 lead. A kill from Guessous and a Loyola error tied the set at 22 before the Ramblers closed out the set on a 3-1 run to win 25-23.
Ohio State travels to State College, Pa., for a midweek match Wednesday at No. 12 Penn State. The nonconference rivals face off at 7 p.m. ET. The Buckeyes then return to St. John Arena, Feb. 9, and kick off a five-match homestand starting with Saint Francis.
