COLUMBUS, Ohio - The No. 11 Ohio State men's volleyball team earned a 3-0 (25-14, 25-22, 25-22) win over MIVA newcomer Lindenwood Saturday night to open the conference season. The Buckeyes improved to 4-2 overall and 1-0 in the conference with the win.
Sophomore Michael Henchy finished with a .667 attack percentage after totaling a match-high 15 kills on 21 attempts. He added a career-best three service aces and had two digs in the win. Seniors John Tholen and Grayson Overman each totaled six kills, while classmate Nick Gibson finished with five.
Tholen had a match-best four blocks for Ohio State, having two solo and two block assists. Overman and Gibson had two blocks each, while Gibson led the team with six digs.
Colin Hackworth led Lindenwood (0-1, 0-1) with 13 kills on the night. Logan Jarus finished with eight, while setter Tim Schmidt totaled 33 assists and four service aces.
Locked at 3-3 to start the first, a four-point Buckeye run pushed the squad ahead at 7-3. Ohio State put together a 4-1 rally to set the score 14-10 and followed with a six-point run for a 23-13 lead. A solo block by Tholen gave the Buckeyes set point at 24-14 and a Lion attack error sealed the 25-14 set win.
The teams exchanged points to start the second until a 7-1 Ohio State run gave the visitors a 16-11 advantage. A kill by Gibson triggered a 4-0 Buckeye run to set the score 23-18 and a kill by Henchy ended a late Lion run to give Ohio State a 25-22 win.
Tied at five early in the third, Lindenwood put together a 7-0 run for a 12-5 advantage. The Buckeyes responded with a four-point run to cut the Lion lead at 12-9 and a kill by Henchy sent the squad on a 7-1 rally to go ahead at 18-16. A kill by Tholen gave the squad a 23-21 advantage and a kill by Henchy secured the 25-22 match win.
The two teams return to Hyland Arena Sunday for a 3 p.m. ET match.
