No. 15 Buckeyes Down George Mason in Three Sets

COLUMBUS, Ohio - The No.15 Ohio State men's volleyball team capped the weekend with a three-set sweep (25-23, 25-22, 25-19) over George Mason Saturday night in St. John Arena and improved to 2-3 on the season.
Redshirt junior Andrew Lutz totaled a season-high 16 kills in the win and finished with three block assists. Redshirt freshman Driss Guessous had a career-best 11 kills for the Buckeyes with a .500 attack percentage. Juniors Michael Henchy and Dustan Neary chipped in eight kills apiece.
George Mason (0-1) was led by Radoslav Popov with 11 kills, while Jack Wilson added 10. Setter Pete Cuppernell had 33 assists and libero Dave Lucas finished with nine digs.
The two squads exchanged back-to-back points to start the first set. Ohio State rallied with a quick 2-1 run to tie the score at seven, highlighted by two Neary kills. A 4-0 lifted the Buckeyes to a 13-11 advantage and a Lutz/Neary block set the score 16-14. The Patriots battled back to tie the set at 21, but the Buckeyes sealed the set on a Lutz kill, 25-23.
Down early in the second set, the Buckeyes pushed an 8-0 run to take a 10-7 advantage. A Neary kill triggered an Ohio State 4-2 run to move the Buckeyes ahead at 16-12. The Patriots forced an Ohio State timeout late in the set following a four-point rally, but Ohio State closed out the set with a kill by Henchy at 25-22.
Ohio State opened up set three with a 5-0 run to force the Patriots to take an early timeout. The Buckeyes used a 7-2 run for a 15-6 advantage before George Mason rallied back to cut the Ohio State lead to five, 17-12. A kill by Henchy gave the Buckeyes set point at 24-18 and a Lutz/Neary block capped the match, 25-19.
Ohio State opens its MIVA schedule on the road at Quincy and Lindenwood. The Buckeyes and the Hawks face off at 8 p.m. ET in Quincy, Ill., Jan. 24. Ohio State then travels to St. Charles, Mo., for another 8 p.m. ET match, Jan. 25, against Lindenwood.
