COLUMBUS, Ohio - The No. 10 Ohio State men's volleyball team fell to No. 5 UCLA Friday in a 3-2 (17-25, 25-22, 18-25, 25-18, 15-13) match on the second day of the Outrigger Hotels and Resorts Invitational on the campus of the University of Hawai'i at Manoa in Honolulu.

Sophomore Michael Henchy paced the Ohio State (2-1) offense with 16 kills on 28 attempts for a .536 attack percentage. He added a service ace and three block assists in the match. Redshirt sophomore Andrew Lutz finished with 12 kills and added a career-best five digs for Ohio State.

Redshirt senior John Tholen totaled seven kills and four blocks (1s,3a), while senior Grayson Overman had a team-high six blocks. Libero Brennan Anderson notched a career-high 14 digs in the loss.

UCLA (5-1) was led by a trio of Bruins with double-digit kills. Dane Worley led all attackers with 19 kills, while Spencer Rowe and Kene Izuchukwu had 13 each. Rowe had a match-high seven blocks, while setter Connor Bannan finished with 51 assists.

The Buckeyes took a quick 5-2 lead to start the first highlighted by a trio of kills from Lutz. The Bruins battled back to come within a point at 10-9 before a five-point Ohio State run pushed the Buckeyes ahead at 15-9. A kill by Tholen and a Bruin error set the score 22-15 and Ohio State captured the set with a 25-17 win.

Set two opened with the teams battling back and forth for points. Down at 10-9, back-to-back UCLA errors and an Overman/Henchy block gave the Buckeyes a 12-10 lead. The Bruins fought back to tie the set at 12 and took a two-point advantage off a kill and block, 17-15. UCLA pushed ahead for a 20-17 lead and went on to take the set, 25-22.

 

 

The third stanza had the squads exchanging points throughout the beginning of the set. Locked at 10 apiece, a 3-1 Buckeye run gave the team a 13-11 advantage. Ohio State used a pair of two-point runs to hold on to its slim lead until a 5-0 run brought the Buckeyes to set point at 24-17. A Henchy kill closed out the set, 25-18.

UCLA regrouped in set four and took an early 4-1 lead. A trio of kills gave the Bruins a 9-5 advantage and two more kills pushed UCLA ahead at 11-7. A 6-1 Bruin run set the score 16-11 and a three-point run gave UCLA a 23-14 lead. The Buckeyes held on to score four-straight points before a kill by Worley led to a 25-18 win to force a fifth set.

Down two at 6-4 in the deciding set, the Buckeyes rebounded and put together a 4-0 run for an 8-6 lead. Locked at nine apiece, another Ohio State run pushed the team ahead at 12-9. UCLA, however, responded with a four-point swing to regain the advantage at 13-12. The Bruins closed out the match with back-to-back blocks to win, 15-13.

Ohio State concludes the Outrigger Hotels and Resorts Invitational Saturday with another Top 10 clash, facing No. 7 Penn State at 9 p.m. ET/4 p.m. HT in Honolulu.
