COLUMBUS, Ohio - The No. 11 Ohio State men's volleyball team opened the 2013 season with a 3-0 (25-17, 25-22, 25-16) win over Saint Francis Saturday night in St. John Arena.
Sophomore Michael Henchy led the match with 12 kills and added three digs and two block assists. Redshirt sophomore Andrew Lutz, who played in his first match for the Buckeyes, finished with 10 kills and two service aces. Sophomore libero Brennan Anderson had a career-best 12 digs, while redshirt senior John Tholen had six kills on seven attempts with a .857 hitting percentage.
Logan Patterson led Saint Francis with 11 kills, while setter Mike Krepp finished with 25 assists. Adam Roche had three block assists to lead the Red Flash.
A pair of Red Flash errors led to a 4-2 Buckeye lead to start the first set and a kill by Lutz made it 6-3. A kill by Tholen sent Ohio State on a three-point run to take a 13-8 advantage. A Grayson Overman kill led to a 5-1 rally to set the score 18-11 and the Buckeyes took the set, 25-17.
The two teams battled back forth to open the second before a kill by Henchy triggered a 4-1 run to give the Buckeyes a 13-11 lead. SFU fought back to regain the lead at 15-14, but Ohio State responded with a 5-1 rally to go up 21-18. A Henchy kill gave Ohio State set point at 24-20 and the Buckeyes held on for a 25-22 win.
Saint Francis kicked off the third with a 5-1 lead following intermission, but the Buckeyes rebounded and utilized a 7-1 run to take their first lead at 9-7. A kill by Chen Levitan sent Ohio State on a six-point run for a 15-10 advantage and the Buckeyes closed out the match on a 6-1 run to win 25-15.
The Buckeyes travel to Hawaii for the 2013 Outrigger Tournament held in Honolulu, Jan. 10-12. Ohio State faces host Hawai'i, No. 6 UCLA and No. 8 Penn State during the three-day tournament.
