Championship Season Continues at NCAA East Prelims

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The 23rd-ranked Ohio State men’s track and field team competes this Thursday-Saturday, May 23-25, at the 2013 NCAA East Regional Preliminaries in Greensboro, N.C.
A total of 19 athletes will represent the Buckeyes in 14 events. The Top 12 athletes/relay teams in each event will automatically advance to the 2013 NCAA Outdoor Championships in Eugene, Ore., June 5-8.
North Carolina A&T University will play host to Ohio State and the top college track and field teams east of the Mississippi River, including those from the Big Ten, ACC, SEC and Big East.

Hartfield and Stanley Take Home Big Ten Honors
The Big Ten Conference office announced the 2013 Big Ten Men’s Outdoor Track and Field individual award winners May 15, with Ohio State claiming two of the six major awards up for grabs. Michael Hartfield was named Field Athlete of the Championships and freshman Billy Stanley honored as Freshman of the Year by conference coaches.
Hartfield won gold in both the long jump (7.69m/25-2.75) and triple jump (15.62m/51-3.00) at the 2013 Big Ten Outdoor Championships at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. It is the second time the senior has won the award, having earned the honor in 2011 along with Field Athlete of the Year honors.
Stanley continued his impressive rookie campaign by winning the javelin throw at the championships with a toss of 75.23m (246-10.00), besting his own school record in the process. The throw was a Big Ten Championship meet record as well. It was the third time this season Stanley broke the school record, the first time coming on his very first collegiate attempt.
Scarlet and Gray Ranked No. 23 in USTFCCCA Week Eight Poll; Second in Regional Rankings
Ohio State checked-in at No. 23 in the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Week Eight rankings, released May 17.
Eight Big Ten teams are featured in the Top 50: No. 9 Wisconsin, No. 10 Nebraska, No. 14 Penn State, the Buckeyes, No. 30 Iowa, No. 36 Illinois, No. 39 Minnesota and No. 46 Indiana. Florida is the No. 1 team in the country, followed by No. 2 Texas A&M and third-ranked Oregon.
In the Great Lakes regional rankings, the Buckeyes are second behind Wisconsin with 674.74 points. Indiana, Akron and Michigan round out the Top 5.

Smith Heading Overseas for the Summer
Following their competition schedules for the 2012-13 academic year, Ohio State student-athletes will be traveling this summer as part of the Ohio State Study Abroad Program.
Among the 15 Buckeyes traveling abroad is track and field senior Korbin Smith, who we be spending his summer in Malawi. Last Time Out
The Buckeyes finished sixth overall at the 2013 Big Ten Outdoor Championships May 12 at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.
Highlights included gold medals from Hartfield in the long jump and triple jump, Stanley’s record-setting victory in the javelin, Faust’s silver medal in the 200m and bronze medal in the 100m, and Fallon’s bronze medal in the 1500m.
Nebraska dominated the team competition, finishing the meet with 131.5 points. Minnesota finished second with 93 points, followed by Wisconsin (86.5). Ohio State closed the meet with a team score of 84, as the third- through sixth-place teams finished within 2.5 points of one another.
