COLUMBUS, Ohio – Redshirt senior Michael Hartfield has been named Big Ten Field Athlete of the Week, the league office announced Wednesday. It marks the fourth weekly Big Ten field award of his career, second of the season.
Hartfield, competing at the Jim Click Shootout in Tucson, Ariz., dominated the field in the long jump with his first-place mark of 8.10m (26-7.00). The Manchester, Conn., native made it two-for-two on the day with a first-place mark of 15.84m (51-11.75) in the triple jump, a top-10 performance in Division I this season.
The week prior at the Texas Relays in Austin, Texas, Hartfield set a new personal-best mark in the long jump with a mark of 8.15m (26-9.00), breaking Jesse Owens’ 77-year old school outdoor record in the process.
Hartfield will compete next at the Jesse Owens Track Classic at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium April 19-20.
