COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Ohio State men's track and field team opened the 2013 season in front of its hometown fans Friday evening at French Field House.
Here's an event-by-event breakdown of the season-opening showcase:
60m
Ohio State finished 1-2, with Nick Batcha taking first in personal-best time of 6.83 seconds and Brandon Blackwell finishing second in 6.93. Third place went to unattached competitor Jason Bailey (7.04).
60m Hurdles
Justin Hines crossed the finish line in a first-place time of 8.24 seconds, followed by Derrick Anderson in 8.48.
200m
Batcha made it two-for-two on the day with a win in the 200m in a time of 21.69. Timothy Faust claimed runner-up honors (21.72), with Eric Metoyer placing third (23.19).
400m
Champ Page was a winner in his OSU debut, crossing the finish line in 48.52 seconds. Antonio Blanks was the runner-up in 48.87 and Javon Walker placed third (49.16).
800m
A time of 1:56.55 helped Marvel Brooks to first place. Kurt Grove (1:57.78) was second, followed by Aaron Rowe of Brooks (1:58.35).
Mile
Chris Fallon, returning from a knee injury suffered during the cross country season, captured first place in a time of 4:13.05. Aaron Rowe of Brooks was the runner-up (4:14.40), with Josh Sabo finishing third (4:22.26).
3000m
Jackson Neff's personal-best time of 8:29.39 was good for first place in the 3000. Sabo took second in 8:42.82, while Jordan Redd placed third in 8:43.32.
Shot Put
Former Buckeye Matt DeChant took first place with a throw of 18.09m (59-4.25). Ashland's Donald Duke was second (17.59m/57-8.50), followed by J.C. Murasky (16.61m/54-6.00).
Long Jump
Michael Hartfield, competing unattached, opened his indoor season with a personal-best jump of 7.98m/26-2.25 - he'll compete for the Buckeyes this outdoor season as a fifth-year senior. Derek Blevins (6.95m/22-9.75) and Korbin Smith (6.76m/22-2.25) placed second and third, respectively.
High Jump
Brant Reardon took first place at 2.03m (6-8.00). Devin Smith was second (2.03m/6-8.00), followed by Jack Kincade (1.93m/6-4.00).
Triple Jump
Julian Vann was the winner with a jump of 14.50m (47-7.00). Blevins placed second at 14.47m (47-5.75).
Weight Throw
Ashland's Garrett Gray used a throw of 20.57m (67-6.00) to finish first overall. Billy Gehring was second at 18.53m (60-9.50) and Joseph Velez third at 18.49m (60-8.00)
Pole Vault
Clearing the bar at 4.85m (15-11.00), Cody Marshall earned a win to open the indoor season. Heath Nickles finished second at 4.70m (15-5.00) and Tyler Borton third at 4.55m (14-11.00).
4x400m Relay
The Ohio State `A' team won the closing event of the meet in a time of 3:18.98.
