COLUMBUS, Ohio – The 23rd-ranked Ohio State men’s track and field team opened competition at the 2013 Big Ten Outdoor Championships Friday at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.
Freshman Joseph Velez starred on day one for Buckeyes, using a personal-best mark of 62.07m (203-8.00) to finish fifth overall and collect four points for the Buckeyes. Minnesota’s Micah Hegerle was the Big Ten champion at 65.34m (214-4.00).
The meet was delayed for approximately an hour and a half due to strong afternoon thunderstorms in the Columbus area.
Other highlights from the first day of competition:
Junior Cory Kunze (3773 points) and senior Heath Nickles (3679) are ninth and 11th, respectively, through five events. Kunze set personal bests in both the long jump (7.40m/24-3.50) and 100m (11.07).
Wisconsin’s Maverick Darling won the conference title in a Jesse Owens Stadium-record time of 29:25.11.
Events resume tomorrow morning at 9:30 a.m. ET.
