COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State’s Distance Medley relay team ran a school-record time of 9:31.71 Friday evening at the Alex Wilson Last Chance Invitational in Notre Dame, Ind.
Chris Fallon, Korbin Smith, Dan White and Cory Leslie broke the previous record set in 2006 by more than 16 seconds in finishing sixth overall. The Buckeyes’ time is among the 12 best in Division I this season and will put the team in consideration for an at-large bid to next weekend’s NCAA championships. Home-standing Notre Dame beat out a competitive field to win the race in an NCAA automatic-qualifying time of 9:29.72.
“We’ve had some great middle distance runners at Ohio State and to break the previous school record by such a wide margin is impressive,” OSU head coach Robert Gary said. “It’s always great to see relays consisting of all Ohio kids run well.”
In other day one action, Michael McCarty (7.18m/23-6.75) finished second in the long jump, while Heath Nickles (5.15m/16-10.75) and Cody Marshall (5.00m/16-4.75) finished sixth and seventh, respectively, in the pole vault. The trio’s marks will place them short of NCAA qualification.
Competition resumes tomorrow at 11:00 a.m. ET.
