South Bend, Ind. – Cole Gorski, the pole vault school record in both the indoor and outdoor Ohio State track and field record books, re-upped his indoor school record by two inches on Friday afternoon at the Meyo Invitational. The senior pole vaulter from Tontogany, Ohio, cleared 5.45m (17-10.50) on his second attempt at the height to improve his already unanimous school record.
Gorski was the top-collegiate finisher of the meet, finishing in second place overall behind professional Nate Richartz (5.55m). The jump of 5.45m is the second best in the Big Ten this season and it ranks No. 11 in the NCAA. The improvement for Gorski from 5.40m to 5.45m is a two inch difference. Coty Cobb also earned a podium finish with a clearance of 5.15m (16-10.75) to place in third.
In the women’s 200m dash, Anavia Battle claimed her first collegiate individual title with a readout of 23.79 to take the top spot in a field of 53 athletes. Her time of 23.79 is the fifth fastest in the Big Ten and it is the sixth-fastest time to be run by a freshman this season in the NCAA. Maggie Barrie (24.43) and Beatrice Hannan (24.49) were just off Battle’s pace and placed third and fourth, respectively.
The men’s distance medley relay squad of Paul Bete, Ryan Harrington, Alex Lomong and Luke Landis earned a first-place finish with a readout of 9:50.29. The time was 6.94 seconds quicker than the second-place time.
Duan Asemota earned himself a fifth-place showing in the men’s 200m open with a clocking of 21.56. Asemota (6.86) qualified for the semifinals of the 60m dash with Tavonte Mott, who clocked a readout of 6.99. Mott also earned a semifinals spot in the 60m hurdles with a time of 8.14. Chantel Ray (60m hurdles/8.36), Battle (60m dash/7.45) and Taylor DeLoach (60m dash/7.59) all advanced to the semifinals in their respective races as well.
In the women’s 5,000m run, Claire Wiles ran herself to the finish line with a personal-best readout of 17:10.08, which was good enough for eighth place.
Day two begins Saturday morning at 9:45 a.m. ET with the semifinals of the 60m hurdles.
