COLUMBUS, Ohio– Four members of the Ohio State men’s tennis team are ranked in the 2012 Intercollegiate Tennis Association Division I Preseason singles poll released Sept. 7. Pacing the Buckeyes is redshirt junior Peter Kobelt, who is 35th in the country. Senior Connor Smith (60), redshirt senior Devin McCarthy (61) and junior Ille Van Engelen (79) also are among the preseason contingent.
Kobelt concluded the 2011-12 campaign with a 25-11 overall record, including a 22-8 mark in dual play and a 9-1 ledger in the Big Ten Conference. Smith, who transferred to Ohio State from Florida State, finished his first season as a Buckeye 30-7 overall and 26-5 in dual matches, including a 5-0 record at No. 5 singles. Smith also posted a 9-1 record in the league. En route to recording a 10-0 mark in the Big Ten in 2012, McCarthy amassed a 28-9 overall record, which included a 24-6 tally in dual matches. With a 23-5 dual-match record, as well as a 27-7 overall record, Van Engelen went 8-1 in the conference.
McCarthy and Van Engelen are in the Top 5 of the doubles poll as the fifth-ranked tandem in the nation. Kobelt and Smith are No. 44. McCarthy and Van Engelen compiled a 33-10 record in 2011-12, including a 23-7 dual mark. The pair went 9-2 in the Big Ten. Kobelt and Smith won 29 matches a season ago vs. five losses. Posting a 10-0 ledger in the league, Kobelt and Smith went 20-2 at No. 3 doubles.
In addition to the preseason rankings, the ITA announced the field for the 2012 ITA Men’s All-American Championships, which will take place Sept. 29-Oct. 7 in Tulsa, Okla. Kobelt earned a spot in the singles main draw, while Smith will compete in the singles qualifying draw. Kobelt and Smith also will participate in the doubles main draw. The trio of Hunter Callahan, Kevin Metka and Wyatt Lippert will play in the prequalifying singles.
