Feb. 18, 2014

COLUMBUS, Ohio – After capturing its first national indoor championship in program history on Monday, the Ohio State men’s tennis team is now ranked No. 1 in the ITA Division I rankings announced Tuesday. The Top ranking is the second time in Ohio State program history after being ranked No. 1 during the 2008-09 season.

HOW THEY GOT TO NO. 1

The Buckeyes defeated four Top 25 programs, including two Top 5 schools en route to their first national team championship in school history last weekend at the 2014 ITA Team Indoor Championships in Houston, Texas. Ohio State opened the tournament with a 4-1 victory over No. 12 Florida before downing No. 10 Texas, 4-2, in the quarterfinals. The Scarlet and Gray then came back down 3-1 against defending champion and then-No.1 Virginia, 4-3, in the semifinals, snapping a 35-match win streak by the Cavaliers.

Ohio State claimed its title with an impressive 4-1 victory against No. 3 USC Monday in the championship match. With the title run under its belt, the team improves to 13-0 this season, marking the best start by Ohio State in school history. The Buckeyes are 9-1 all-time as the No. 1 team in the country.
