COLUMBUS, Ohio – Peter Kobelt and Kevin Metka, members of the Ohio State men’s tennis team, won their first round match before losing in the second round in the 32-team doubles field of the 2013 USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships Thursday. In singles action Kobelt was knocked out of the tournament in the first round. With the losses, the Buckeyes move on to consolation doubles and singles which begins Friday at 9 a.m.
Kobelt and Metka were down four sets to three before rallying to an 8-5 defeat of Cornell's Sam Fleck and Chris Vrabel in their first match of the day. The Buckeye tandem then faced Robin Goodman and Ravi Patel of Drake, who advanced on a bye, in their second round match. Kobelt and Metka were unable to prevail, falling by a score of 8-6.
Kobelt also began play in the singles main draw Thursday, squaring off with USC’s Ray Sarmiento. In a rematch of their singles bout in the 2013 NCAA Quarterfinals, in which Ohio State defeated USC 4-3 and then-No. 16 Kobelt defeated then-No. 8 Sarmiento 7-6 (7-3), 7-6 (7-3), Sarmiento was the victor this time around as Kobelt lost by a 6-2, 6-3 margin.
