Pair of Buckeyes Advance to Quarterfinals of ITA Midwest Regionals

Singles Bracket | Doubles Bracket COLUMBUS, Ohio– Peter Kobelt and Constantin Christ, members of the Ohio State men’s tennis team, advanced to the quarterfinals of the singles bracket of the USTA/ITA Midwest Regionals at the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility in East Lansing, Mich., Saturday. Kobelt also will compete in the doubles quarterfinals with teammate Kevin Metka, as well as the Buckeye duo of Connor Smith and Hunter Callahan. In addition to quarterfinal action in both singles and doubles play, doubles semifinals matches at the Midwest Regionals will be contested at 12:30 p.m. Sunday. Kobelt and Christ will face a pair of Illinois student-athletes in No. 11 seed Stephen Hoh and No. 13 Jared Hiltzik, respectively. In doubles, Kobelt and Metka will play No. 8 Farris Gosea and Tim Kopinski, also from Illinois, while Smith and Callahan will prepare for Michigan’s Barrett Franks and Vlad Stefan. After a long day Friday, Kobelt, a redshirt junior from New Albany, Ohio, returned to action and recorded back-to-back singles wins vs. Petr Satral of Wisconsin and Illinois’ Ross Guigmon. Kobelt, the No. 2 seed, defeated Satral, 6-2, 6-2, before downing Guigmon, 6-4, 7-6. Following a tough three-set win (7-5, 4-6, 6-3) over Gosea, Christ , the 15th seed from Eppstein, Germany, relinquished only four games to Chris Jackman of Northwestern to win 6-1, 6-3.
In doubles, No. 2 Kobelt and Metka, a redshirt sophomore from Worthington, Ohio, were forced into a tiebreaker in the second round by DePaul’s Sten Leusink and Jan-Willem Feilzer, but prevailed 9-8(6). The Buckeye tandem’s next meeting was a little less stressful as they beat No. 9 seed Erik Finkenbrink and Craig Cox of Wisconsin Green Bay, 8-1. The seventh seed, Smith, a senior from Tampa, Fla., and Callahan, a redshirt sophomore from Lower Gwynedd, Pa., opened Saturday with an 8-2 victory vs. Wisconsin Green-Bay’s Joey Leto and Gary Notkin before downing Illinois’ Hiltzik and Alex Jesse, 8-4. Metka, Smith, Callahan and redshirt junior Wyatt Lippert were eliminated from singles competition Saturday. Metka dropped a 6-1, 6-3 decision to No. 1 seed Evan King of Michigan after beating Michigan State’s Will Davis, 7-6, 6-7, 6-3. Smith posted a second-round 6-2, 6-4 triumph vs. Quinton Monaghan of Notre Dame, but lost his third-round match to Stefan , 6-3, 3-6, 6-3. Upsetting No. 3 seed Greg Andrews of Notre Dame, 6-4, 6-4, Callahan fell to Illinois’ Brian Page in the next round, 6-1, 6-4.
