Ohio State Records Successful Day at ITA Midwest Regionals

COLUMBUS, Ohio– All six Ohio State men’s tennis players competing in the 2012 ITA Midwest Regional advanced to the second round Friday night at the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility in East Lansing, Mich. Play will continue at 11 a.m. Saturday with second and third-round singles action, followed by second-round doubles matches. Consolation singles matches also will be contested.
No. 2 seed Peter Kobelt, a redshirt junior from New Albany, Ohio, had a long day as he finished his singles match at 11:30 p.m. Friday. Despite the challenge, Kobelt was a 7-6(4), 6-4 winner over DePaul’s Kyle Johnson and now will face Petr Satral of Wisconsin in the second round Saturday.
The sixth seed, senior Connor Smith, a native of Tampa, Fla., pulled off a 6-4, 6-3 straight-set victory vs. Ross VanderPloeg of Western Michigan. Up next for Smith is Notre Dame’s Quinton Monaghan.
Freshman Constantin Christ, the 14th seed, downed Axel Lagerlof of Northern Illinois, 6-1, 6-1 in the opening round. Hailing from Eppstein, Germany, Christ will face Illinois’ Farris Gosea next.
A trio of unseeded Buckeyes also posted first-round victories in Hunter Callahan, Kevin Metka and Wyatt Lippert. Callahan, a redshirt sophomore from Lower Gwynedd, Pa., beat Wisconsin Green-Bay’s Craig Cox, 7-5, 6-1 and will play Greg Andrews of Notre Dame in the second round. A Central Ohio native from Worthington, redshirt sophomore Metka was pushed to three sets against DePaul’s Filip Dzanko, but prevailed 7-6, 6-7, 7-6. Michigan State’s Will Davis is Metka’s next opponent. A redshirt junior from Cincinnati, Ohio, Lippert defeated Vukasin Teofunovi of Marquette, 6-3, 6-4. Lippert’s next opponent is Jared Hiltzik of Illinois.
Two of the three Buckeye doubles tandems advanced to the second round after first-round wins Friday. Seeded second in the tournament, Kobelt and Metka downed the Marquette pair of David Packowitz and James Stark, 8-5. Smith and Callahan, the No. 7 seed, beat Axel Lagerlof and Simon Formont of Northern Illinois, 8-3. Notre Dame’s Michael Moore and Wyatt McCoy advanced to the second round via a default by the Scarlet and Gray duo of Diaz and Christ.
Up next for Kobelt and Metka are Sten Leusink and Jan-Willem Feilzer of DePaul. Smith and Callahan will face Wisconsin Green Bay’s Joey Leto and Gary Notkin.
