Buckeyes Continue Action at Midwest Regional
Hunter Callahan will compete in the quarterfinals of the singles and doubles Sunday.

COLUMBUS, Ohio– Members of the Ohio State men’s tennis team advanced to the quarterfinals of the singles and doubles competition of the 2013 USTA/ITA Midwest Championship Saturday. The Buckeyes are serving as hosts of the event in the Varsity Tennis Center located at 880 W. Henderson Rd.
In singles action, Ohio State split its wins with three Buckeyes advancing to the quarterfinals, while three others failed to continue on in the bracket. Hunter Callahan, Chris Diaz and Peter Kobelt will continue play at 9 a.m. Sunday. Marko Goles-Babic, Constantin Christ and Kevin Metka were bounced from competition with early-round losses.
A Lower Gwynedd, Pa., native Callahan posted a 6-4, 6-4 win over Filip Dzanko of DePaul in the second round before dispatching Notre Dame’s Kenneth Sabacinski 6-1, 6-4 in the Round of 16. Diaz, a Hilliard, Ohio, native, beat Leopold Gomez Isling of Wisconsin Green Bay 6-2, 6-4. Not long after, Diaz was taken to three sets, but prevailed 6-7, 6-3, 6-0 over Mihir Kumar of Northwestern in the third round. Kobelt, the No. 1 seed won consecutive matches in straight sets. In the round of 32, the New Albany, Ohio, native defeated Northern Illinois’ Axel Lagerlof 7-6, 6-3 before handing Josh Hagar of Notre Dame a 6-1, 6-4 setback.
After prevailing 6-4, 6-1 in the round of 32 vs. Alex Pasareanu of Northwestern, Metka of Worthington, Ohio, dropped a 6-4 6-4 decision to Aaron Pfister of Michigan State a round later. Goles-Babic successfully advanced to the round of 16 in 7-6, 7-6 win vs. Sam Shropshire of Northwestern, but could not continue the winning trend against Illinois’ Tim Kopinski. Christ, who hails from Eppstein, Germany, fell in the round of 32 6-4, 6-2 to Illinois’ Farris Gosea.
In doubles, Callahan and Diaz paired up to win back-to-back matches to advance to the quarterfinals Sunday. In the round of 32, the Buckeye tandem downed Ismail Kadyrov and Bobby Cawood of Detroit, 8-3. In their next victory, Callahan and Diaz defeated Wisconsin’s Frederik Strabo and Alexander Kokorev, 8-5. Kobelt and Metka won, 8-3, vs. Matt Kuelker and Manuel Bellutti of Cleveland State before an 8-4 victory vs. Mark Singil and Stjepan Sisko of Toledo.
