Buckeyes Advance in Singles and Doubles Main Draw

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Five members of the Ohio State men's tennis team advanced to the second round of the singles main draw at 2013 USTA/ITA Midwest Regional Championships Friday. Additionally, two of the three Scarlet and Gray doubles teams advanced to the second round of the doubles main draw.

The first Buckeye to earn a singles victory at the USTA/ITA Midwest Regionals was No. 1-seed Peter Kobelt. In his first round match, the senior defeated Valparaiso's Dave Bacalla by a score of 6-3, 7-6. Next on the courts for Ohio State was Kevin Metka. The Worthington, Ohio, native won 6-4, 6-2 against Patryk Koscielski of Detroit. In his first competitive action for the Scarlet and Gray, Marko Goles-Babic, a freshman from Croatia, defeated Jeffrey Schorsch from Valparaiso 6-4, 6-4.

Ohio State fielded three additional competitors in the singles main draw and all earned victories as well. Sophomore Constantin Christ defeated Notre Dame's Eddy Covalschi in two sets. After winning the first set 6-2, Christ rallied from a 5-2 deficit to win the second set 7-5. Chris Diaz then defeated Michigan's Kevin Wong by a score of 6-1, 6-4. The final Buckeye to earn a spot in the second round of the singles main draw was Hunter Callahan. The Lower Gwynedd, Pa., native won 6-3, 6-0 against Ruben Greiner of Western Michigan.

In doubles main draw action, the tandem of Kobelt and Metka will face the winner of the match between Bacalla and Charlie Emhardt of Valparaiso and Matt Kuelker and Manuel Bellutti of Cleveland State, after the Buckeye pair advanced on a first round bye. Callahan and Diaz also advanced, with an 8-5 victory against Paul John and Tim Corwin of DePaul. After picking up his first career singles victory, Goles-Babic partnered with Christ for his first career doubles match. The Buckeye tandem fell to University of Wisconsin Green Bay duo of Rowan Isaaks and Leopold Gomez Islinger 8-7 (3).

Up next for the Buckeyes is the second round of the singles and doubles main draws, which begin at 7:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Saturday, respectively. All matches will be held at the Varsity Tennis Center and live stats will be available on the tournament central page.
