COLUMBUS, Ohio - Steven Williams and Wyatt Lippert, members of the Ohio State men's tennis team, each went 2-0 on day one of qualifying at the 2011 USTA/ITA Division I Men's Midwest Regional Championships Thursday at the Varsity Tennis Center in Columbus, Ohio. Ohio State is serving as hosts of the prestigious event.
Lippert, a redshirt-sophomore, defeated Marc Shideler of Western Michigan 6-2, 6-4 in the initial round of qualifying. The Cincinnati, Ohio, native then proceeded to beat Valparaiso's Chris Baum 6-1, 6-2 in the second round. He will meet Axel Lagerlof of Northern Illinois Friday in the third round of qualifying with a bid to the singles main draw on the line. The third round of qualifying begins at 8 a.m. ET.
Williams, a Manlius, N.Y., native, began his senior season in perfect style with wins in the first two rounds of qualifying. Williams, the No. 2 seed in the draw, defeated Vukasin Teofanovic of Marquette 3-6, 7-6 (8-6), 6-0 in the first round and Toledo's Grant Adams 6-1, 6-2 in the second round. Williams will attempt to advance to the main draw Friday when he faces the winner of the Craig Cox and Mike Basha match.
