COLUMBUS, Ohio – When posed against elite competition on the collegiate, national and international stages, the Ohio State men’s swimming program has a history of rising to the occasion. Current Buckeyes are continuing to build on this established tradition, ranking among the world’s fastest in their respective events.

Ohio State has four swimmers ranked among the Top 100 individual competitors in the world, as well as seven team members in the Top 100 in the United States. Two Buckeye relays – the 400 medley and 400 freestyle – hold the third-fastest times in the U.S. in their respective events this year. Internationally, four Buckeyes hold rankings in their native nations of Switzerland, Germany, Russia and Hungary.

Tim Phillips, who ended last season with a Big Ten record-setting time of 45.10 in the 100 butterfly at the NCAA championships, has solidified himself as one of the world’s best in the 100 butterfly, 50 butterfly and 100 freestyle. Ranked fourth internationally in the 100 butterfly, Phillips’ time of 51.49 is the third-fastest time by an American this year. The Vienna, W. Va., native also holds a Top 3 time in the U.S. in the 50 butterfly (23.57), the 17th-fastest time in the world in 2014.

Along with Phillips, junior DJ MacDonald is making a name for himself on the international level. A native of Toledo, Ohio, MacDonald currently holds the fifth- and seventh-fastest times in the U.S. in the 200 and 100 breaststroke events, respectively. In the world, his 200 breaststroke time of 2:11.27 ranks 29th, while a time of 1:00.77 in the 100 breaststroke is 37th overall.

Phillips and MacDonald recently qualified to be members of the U.S. National Team with Top 6 finishes at the 2014 Phillips 66 National Championships.

Currently, Phillips is preparing to compete at the Pan Pacific Championships in Gold Coast, Australia. The premier international meet is scheduled to take place Aug. 21-25. Phillips’ progress from the meet will be posted on OhioStateBuckeyes.com.

As a member of Team USA, MacDonald will have the opportunity to compete in international events, such as the Pan American Games or World University Games.

The third Buckeye to hold a world ranking is senior Rowan Williams. At the Central Zone 3 sectional championships earlier this summer, Williams recorded times of 54.95 and 1:59.76 in the 100 and 200 backstroke events, respectively. The times place the Ottawa Hills, Ohio, native 10th in the 100 backstroke and 11th in the 200 backstroke in the U.S. this year. In the world, Williams holds the 57th- and 59th-fastest times in both events.

Williams’ classmate, Steven Zimmerman, is the 70th-fastest in the world (12th in the U.S.) in the 100 backstroke this year. The Morrow, Ohio, native is also ranked among the nation’s Top 60 in the 200 backstroke (No. 27; 2:01.70) and 200 individual medley (No. 54; 2:05.07).

Buckeyes Michael DiSalle, Josh Fleagle and Keanu Stevenson round out the team’s seven individuals in the U.S. rankings. DiSalle, a junior from Toledo, Ohio, has recorded the 27th- and 30th-fastest times in the 200 freestyle (1:49.81) and 100 freestyle (49.82), respectively. Fleagle’s top ranking is in the 200 freestyle (No. 48; 1:51.09), while Stevenson’s is in the 100 breaststroke (No. 55; 1:03.93).

Outside of the United States, Jovan Mitrovic, Steffen Hillmer, Vladislav Komarov and Tamas Gercsak all hold top times in their respective countries. A complete listing of Ohio State’s current representatives in national and world rankings follows:
