Summer Session: Buckeye Swimming Takes Over Oxford

With the 2013-14 season right around the corner, members of the Ohio State men's and women's swimming programs traveled to Oxford, Ohio July 22-25 for the central zone, sectional three leg of the USA Swimming Speedo Champions Series. Competing alongside the Ohio State University Swim Club, the Buckeyes took third with 918 total points.
Also on day one, Rabold, a rising sophomore from Columbus, Ohio, earned a 12th-place finish in the 200 backstroke (2:20.97). In the 50 freestyle, Schmidtke placed second with a time of 26.28. Schmidtke will be entering her junior season with the Buckeyes after transferring before the start of last season from New Mexico State.
On the men's side, the Buckeyes showcased their depth in the 200 breaststroke by sweeping the Top 3 spots. Rising junior Dmitry Dolgov placed first in 2:17.04, while rising senior Dak Stone earned second in 2:18.43. Touching third in a time of 2:18.58 was rising junior Chris Cowley. That wasn't all for the Buckeyes, however, John Zucca, also a rising junior, placed seventh in 2:22.79.
Rising sophomore Alex Hutchinson competed in the 50 freestyle, finishing in 11th-place (24.29), while teammate Ryan Bubb followed closely in 13th-place (24.58). The 200 backstroke event concluded with rising junior Dominic Pecze taking 13th in 2:03.85.
In distance swimming, Sean Monahan took sixth in the 1500 freestyle with a time of 16:21.03.
The Ohio State Swim Club concluded day one in third-place with 257 points earned.
Rounding out the day for the men's contingent was the 400 freestyle relay, which included Ohio State's Trebilcock, Bubb and Osterhage. The group took the runner-up spot with a time of 3:30.57.
The Ohio State women had an impressive showing on day two with Norris leading the way in the 200 freestyle (2:02.59). Luchansky followed in third-place (2:04.56), while Schmidtke earned ninth in a time of 2:03.63.
Also competing in the 100 butterfly as well as the 400 freestyle relay, Schmidtke had a busy second day of competition. With a time of 1:01.69, she placed second in the 100 butterfly. Alongside teammates Luchansky, Norris and Rabold, Schmidtke bounced back for first in the 400 freestyle relay in 3:51.56.
On day two, the Ohio State Swim Club climbed to second with 556 points.
Two wins were recorded on the day for the men's side. In the 200 butterfly, Morgan dropped a time of 2:05.47 for the win. Also swimming to victory was Stone, who with a time of 1:03.43 conquered the 100 breaststroke.
The leaderboard of the 100 breaststroke was filled with Buckeyes as Cowley followed Stone in second (1:04.18) and Keanu Stevenson took fourth (1:04.86). In the event, Zucca also placed fifth (1:05.71), Andrew Brower placed seventh (1:06.01) and Dolgov placed ninth in the B Final (1:05.19).
Rising sophomore Sam Decker swam to a ninth-place finish in the 100 backstroke with a time of 59.05, while Monahan took fifth in the 400 freestyle in 4:03.09.
A pair of Buckeyes - Monahan and Ian Betts - finished back-to-back in sixth and seventh in the 800 freestyle with times of 8:30.81 and 8:34.04, respectively. Rising sophomore Dan DiSalle concluded the day with a 17th-place showing in the finals of the 100 freestyle (52.57).
For the Ohio State women, Luchansky rounded out a busy week in the pool by touching seventh in the 200 individual medley, while Sara Craft took 10th in the 1500 freestyle (17:47.01).
In her first individual win of the meet, Schmidtke placed first with a time of 56.43 in the 100 freestyle.
Next up, a group of Buckeyes will travel to Irving, Calif. for the 2013 U.S. Open July 30- Aug. 3.
