Head coach Bill Wadley, who will be entering his 25th season at the helm of Ohio State this fall, has been busy this summer. Most recently, Wadley has been the technical director for the swimming events at the World University Games in Kazan, Russia, overseeing the construction of the facility, while making sure the elite internatinal meet is run smoothly. Wadley will serve as Technical Chair for the World University Games through 2015.
The 2010 Big Ten Coach of the Year, Wadley's teams have posted seven consecutive Top 20 finishes at the NCAA Championships; his teams have been ranked in the NCAA Top 25 for 21 of the past 24 years.
Rising junior Tamas Gercsak qualified for the semifinals of the 200 individual medley Thursday at the World University Games and finished 12th overall in the finals with a time of 2:03.66. Dropping a time of 2:03.95 for 15th-place in the preliminary round, Gercsak got off to an impressive start representing Hungary at the meet.
A native of Budapest, Hungary, Gercsak also placed 18th overall in the 200 fly with a personal-best time of 2:00.94. He was out-touched at the wall by just a .06 margin from making his second finals Sunday. On Saturday, Gercsak notched a personal-best time of 54.75 in the 100 fly.
Gercsak currently holds Ohio State varsity records in the 200 butterfly (1:43.54) as well as the 400 individual medley (3:45.17). Marking his first appearance at the NCAA championships, Gercsak rounded out his sophomore campaign with a ninth-place showing in the 200 butterfly. Last season he earned four individual wins and ranked as the Scarlet and Gray's top performer in the 200 butterfly, 200 individual medley and 400 individual medley.
Ohio State will finish out its summer racing, sendng a group of swimmers to Sectionals in Oxford, Ohio, July 22-25, while another group will comepete at the 2013 U.S. Open July 30-August 3 in Irvine, Calif.
