Rising junior Tamas Gercsak qualified for the semifinals of the 200 individual medley Thursday at the World University Games in Kazan, Russia. Dropping a time of 2:03.95 for 15th-place in the preliminary round, Gercsak is off to a solid start representing Hungary at the meet.
A native of Budapest, Hungary, Gercsak will compete in three events at the World University Games: the 100 butterfly, 200 butterfly and 200 individual medley. Preliminaries of the 200 butterfly are scheduled for Friday, while the 100 butterfly will kick off Sunday.
Gercsak currently holds Ohio State varsity records in the 200 butterfly (1:43.54) as well as the 400 individual medley (3:45.17). Marking his first appearance at the NCAA championships, Gercsak rounded out his sophomore campaign with a ninth-place showing in the 200 butterfly. Last season he earned four individual wins and ranked as the Scarlet and Gray's top performer in the 200 butterfly, 200 individual medley and 400 individual medley.
