COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State men’s swimming and diving team is set to compete at the 2013 NCAA Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships this week at the IU Natatorium in Indianapolis, Ind. The 12 Buckeye participants is one of the largest in recent history and head swimming coach Bill Wadley and the squad are ready for the opportunity this weekend at one of the fastest meets in the world.
“This group of young men are very competitive and are excited and looking forward to competing against the best in the NCAA,” said Wadley, who has now qualified swimmers in 21 of his 24 years at Ohio State. The team has now sent at least 10 swimmers to NCAAs in five out of the last six seasons.
Competition will take place starting Thursday and continue through Saturday. Only a seniors are among the 11 student-athletes who will perform at the NCAA championships. The team also consists of three juniors and five sophomores. On pool the pool deck with Wadley and assistant Dave Rollins will be six swimmers with NCAA experience. The six Buckeyes who have previous NCAA championship experience are Zach Holmes, Zach Birnbrich, Alex Miller, Tim Phillips, Jason Schnur and Keanu Stevenson. Ohio State’s swimming group will consist of (and their qualifying events):
- Zach Birnbrich (Anthem, Ariz.) – 200 freestyle relay/400 freestyle relay
- Michael DiSalle (Toledo, Ohio) – 800 freestyle relay

- Zach Holmes (Houston, Texas) – 200 freestyle/200 freestyle relay/400 freestyle relay/800 freestyle relay
- Connor McDonald (Lake Oswego, Oregon) – 200 backstroke/400 medley relay
- Alex Miller (Cincinnati, Ohio) – 500 freestyle/800 freestyle relay
- Tim Phillips (Vienna, W.Va.) – 100 butterfly/200 freestyle relay/200 medley relay/400 freestyle relay/400 medley relay
- Jason Schnur (Cincinnati, Ohio) – 50 freestyle/200 freestyle relay/200 medley relay/400 freestyle relay/400 medley relay

The Buckeyes have a rich NCAA history, with 11 NCAA team titles – second-most in NCAA history - with the last in 1962. Ohio State has finished in the Top 15 at the NCAA Championships in the last four-consecutive seasons. Last year, the Buckeyes notched a 12th-place mark at NCAAs.
Buckeyes have won a total of 60 NCAA swimming championships (total includes seven relay championships) and 58 NCAA diving championships. Sean Moore is the last Buckeye to win an NCAA title, winning the 10-meter platform event in 2008. The last swimmer to win an NCAA crown for Ohio State: Robert Hopper in 1963.
ALL-AMERICANS AND MORE
Ohio State has produced 264 swimming All-American honors (includes honorable mention All-Americans) and 174 diving All-Americans. Last year, Ohio State had a total of 22 All-American recognitions at the 2012 NCAA Championships.
The Buckeyes, under 24th-year swimming coach Bill Wadley and 35th-year diving coach Vince Panzano, are coming off a 8-2 dual meet season. The team finished third overall at the Big Ten Championships and won the Ohio State Invitational Dec. 2 in Columbus. Last summer, the Buckeyes sent a program-record 28 swimmers to the U.S Olympic Trials.
LEADERS IN THE CLASSROOM
The Ohio State men’s swimming and diving team posted an Ohio State-best 28 Academic All-Big Ten honorees, the conference office announced Wednesday. To be eligible for Academic All-Big Ten selection, student-athletes must be letterwinners who are in at least their second academic year at their institution and carry a cumulative grade-point average of 3.0 or higher. 200 freestyle relay, 400 freestyle relay
Returns to the NCAA championships for the third-consecutive season … holds an Ohio State varsity record alongside current teammates Jason Schnur and Zach Holmes as well as former teammate Lincoln Fahrbach in the 200 freestyle relay (1:17.70)…notched NCAA “B” cut times in three events this season: 50 freestyle (19.97), 100 freestyle (44.20) and 100 butterfly (47.93)…earned honorable mention NCAA All-America status for placing 11th (1:18.41) in the 200 freestyle relay at the 2012 NCAA Championships…ranks third on the Buckeye depth chart in the 50 freestyle.
800 freestyle relay
Will be making his first appearance at the NCAA championships…earned NCAA “B” cut times in three different events: 50 freestyle (19.97), 100 freestyle (44.02) and 200 freestyle (1:36.50)…ranks as Ohio State’s third-fastest competitor in the 200 freestyle, as well as fourth-fastest in the 50 and 100 freestyle events….qualified for the 2012 Olympic Trials in the 100 and 200 freestyle…placed third at the 2013 Big Ten Championships as a member of the 800 freestyle relay.
200 IM, 400 IM, 200 butterfly
As a sophomore, he will compete in his first NCAA championship meet…holds the OSU varsity record in the 400 individual medley with a time of 3:45.17…ranks among the NCAA’s Top 25 swimmers in the 200 butterfly (14th), 200 individual medley (25th) and 400 individual medley (19th)….dropped NCAA “B” cut times in four events: 100 butterfly (47.42), 200 butterfly (1:43.84), 200 individual medley (1:44.99) and 400 individual medley (3:45.17)…holds the top spot on the Buckeye depth chart in the 200 butterfly, 200 individual medley and 400 individual medley.

Will compete at his first NCAA championship meet…enters the meet as the 11th-ranked competitor in the 200 backstroke with an OSU team best time of 1:41.86…earned NCAA “B” cut times in three events: 100 backstroke (54.26), 200 backstroke (1:41.86) and 200 individual medley (1:48.72)…picked up second team All-Big Ten honors at the 2013 Big Ten Championships…finished fourth at Big Tens in the 200 backstroke...swam at the 2012 U.S. Olympic Trials, competing in the 100 and 100 backstroke events.
500 freestyle, 800 freestyle relay
The 2013 NCAA Championships will be his second-consecutive appearance at the national meet…ranks among the Top 25 NCAA competitors in the 500 freestyle event… regarded as the fastest distance competitor for the Buckeyes with times of 4:17.80 and 15:03.98 in the 500 and 1650 freestyle, respectively…earned NCAA “B” cut times in three events: 200 freestyle, 500 freestyle and 1650 freestyle…received honorable mention NCAA All-America accolades last season…represented Ohio State at the 2012 U.S. Olympic Trials in the 400 and 1500 freestyle events.
1-meter dive, 3-meter dive, 10-meter platform dive
2013 Big Ten Co-Diver of the Meet and First Team All-Big Ten selection … claimed the Big Ten title on the three-meter springboard with a total score of 467.10 points … won the Big Ten title on the one-meter springboard in 2012 … becomes the first OSU male diver to win the three-meter event since former Buckeye Kellen Harkness won the title during the 2007 campaign … qualified for his second NCAAs after placing third in the one-meter spring board with a combined score of 761.10 points at NCAA Diving Zones in West Lafayette … was a five-time Big Ten Diver of the Week honoree in 2012-13.
100 butterfly, 200 freestyle relay, 200 medley relay, 400 freestyle relay, 400 medley relay
Phillips will compete at his third NCAA championship meet…redshirted last season to prepare for the 2012 U.S. Olympic Trials where he went on to finish just four spots shy of earning an Olympic team spot (sixth-place)…holds an individual OSU varsity record in the 100 butterfly (45.85)…was also part of four school-record holding relays: 400 freestyle relay (2:52.00), 800 freestyle relay (6:21.10), 200 medley relay (1:24.79) and 400 medley relay (3:07.68)…ranks fifth among NCAA competitors in the 100 butterfly…earned an NCAA “A” cut time in the 100 butterfly as well as NCAA “B” cut times in the 100 freestyle and 200 individual medley…picked up second team All-Big Ten accolades at the 2013 Big Ten Championships…earned NCAA All-America honors as a freshman for an eighth-place finish in the 800 freestyle relay.

Returns to the NCAA championships for the third-consecutive season…earned NCAA All-America as a freshman for his contribution to the seventh-place 200 medley relay team…earned individual All-American recognition for his Top 3 performance in the 50 freestyle just last season…will compete in five events at NCAAs for the second-consecutive season…holds individual OSU varsity records in the 50 and 100 freestyle events with times of 19,12 and 42.70, respectively…was also a member of the school record-breaking 200 freestyle relay in 2012 (1:17.70) and 200 medley in 2013 (1:24.79)…ranks as the 11th-fastest competitor in the NCAA in the 50 freestyle…earned NCAA “B” cut times in three events: 50 freestyle, 100 freestyle and 100 butterfly…has won two Big Ten championships – 50 and 100 freestyle – over the course of his Buckeye career…competed at the 2012 U.S. Olympic Trials, where he placed eighth overall in the 50 freestyle in 42.70.

As a sophomore, he will compete at his second-consecutive NCAA championships…received honorable mention All-America status last season as a member of the 200 and 400 medley relays…contributed to a new school record in the 200 medley relay at the 2013 Big Ten Championship meet (1:24.79)…picked up second team All-Big Ten honors for his performance at this season’s championships…holds OSU’s fastest time in the 100 breaststroke (54.00)…qualified for the 2012 U.S. Olympic Trials in the 100 breaststroke.
200 medley relay
Will be competing at his first NCAA championships this weekend … qualified for the 2012 U.S. Olympic Team Trials in the 100 butterfly … named 2012 Second Team All-Big Ten selection after being part of the 200 medley relay squad that finished second at the Big Ten Championships with an OSU record time of 1:24.79 … individually, finished 11th in the 200 butterfly and eighth in the 100 butterfly at the 2013 Big Ten Championships.
Will be competing at his first NCAA championships this weekend … placed seventh in the 200 backstroke and 12th overall in the 200 individual medley and 400 individual medley events at the 2013 Big Ten Championships … Earned the Mike Cochran Award, given to the team's most promising freshman in 2012 at the season ending awards banquet ... specializes in backstroke and individual medley events for the Buckeyes.
