Four Buckeye Divers Qualify for NCAA Championships
March 14, 2004
Four Ohio State divers qualified for the NCAA championships at the 2004 NCAA Zone C Qualifier, March 12-14, in Bloomington, Ind. after their performances in the 1- and 3-meter dives and in the platform dive. Divers from across the Midwest participated at the qualifier, hoping to earn a spot at the men's and women's NCAA swimming and diving championships. Ohio State was the only school to qualify four student-athletes for the national championships.
Julie Broms (Fr., Springfield, Ill./North Central[Ind.]) led the women's squad with a first-place finish in the 3-meter dive at the Saturday afternoon session. Broms scored 500.95 points in the 3-meter dive, defeating 2004 Big Ten Champion Carrie McCambridge of Purdue by more than three points. Ashley Bourland (Fr., Conroe, Texas/Montgomery) qualified for the platform dive in the last day of competition, finishing in third place with a score of 383.55. By qualifying in the platform dive, Bourland will be the only Buckeye to compete in both the springboard events and in the platform dive at the national championships.
The men's squad secured two spots at the qualifier, with 2004 Big Ten Champion Mitch Richeson (Jr., Greenwood, Ind./Greenwood) and Kellen Harkness (Fr., Puyallup, Wash./Cascade Christian) posting top finishes in the 1- and 3-meter dives. Richeson had a second-place finish in the 1-meter dive with a score of 643.65, missing the first-place finish by less than two points. In the 3-meter dive, Richeson placed fourth with a score of 489.75 and was closely followed by Harkness in fifth place with a score of 484.75. Harkness's finish in the 3-meter dive qualified him for the NCAA championships. The Big Ten diving squads dominated the men's events and earned all six spots at the qualifier, with Ohio State being the only school to qualify two divers.
Broms and Bourland will travel to College Station, Texas, March 18-20, for the women's 2004 NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships at the Student Recreation Center, while Richeson and Harkness will travel to Long Island, N.Y., March 25-27, for the men's 2004 NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships at the Nassau County Aquatic Center.
