Columbus, Ohio – Freshman Kristen Romano dropped her personal best by more than six seconds in the 500 freestyle on day two of the USA Swimming Winter National Championships Thursday night at McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion to register the best finish by a Buckeye on the night with a fifth-place showing.

Romano closed the final in 57 seconds to earn the fifth-place finish. Molly Kowal finished less than a second behind Romano for the sixth spot on the leaderboard with a readout of 4:42.28. In the men’s 500 freestyle, Brayden Seal and Nick Hogsed replicated the women’s five-six finish. Seal touched the wall with a readout of 4:19.37 and Hogsed followed with a 4:20.43.

Ohio State’s only A finalist in the 200 individual medley, Meg Bailey used splits of 25.42, 29.23, 34.63 and 28.60 to take sixth place with a time of 1:57.88. Freya Rayner and Aliena Schmidtke matched each other’s times in the A final of the 50 freestyle to tie for seventh with clockings of 22.25; the 22.25 for Rayner is a personal best. Representing the men in the 50 freestyle A final was Josh Fleagle (unattached). He also placed seventh (19.77).


 

 

In addition to the A final swimmers, Kevin Musterait had a solid showing in his B final winning the 50 freestyle heat with a time of 20.04. On the women’s side, Cheyene Meek took the top spot in her C final in the 50 freestyle with a personal-best time of 22.75. Kalvin Koethke also won his C final in the 50 freestyle with a time of 20.16. The final Buckeye to win her C final was Kathrin Demler in the 500 freestyle with a clocking of 4:45.01.

In the 400 medley relay finals, each of Ohio State’s squads place third. The women’s group of Romano, Hanna Gresser, Bailey and Macie McNichols registered a time of 3:36.95, and the men’s foursome of Mark Belanger, Paul DeLakis, Michael Salazar and Andrew Loy finished the night out with a time of 3:10.40.

Day three will begin Friday morning at 9 a.m. ET at McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion and finals with commence at 5 p.m. ET. Ohio State will also be competing at the Total Performance Invitational on Friday.
