COLUMBUS, Ohio - To kick off the 2012-13 season, the Ohio State men’s swimming team hosted its annual Scarlet vs. Gray intrasquad meet Friday. Gray defeated Scarlet with a total of 146 points at McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion.
In front of a crowd of Buckeye alumni, the gray recorded 10 victories on the night. Sophomore Steven Zimmerman and senior Jason Schnur touched first in two individual events for the gray. Zimmerman recorded wins in the 100 and 200 backstroke, while Schnur won his signature 50 and 100 freestyle events.
“It’s fun to get started racing,” 24th-year head coach Bill Wadley said. “I think the guys need racing. Some haven’t raced since August or July, so getting back into the groove and finding their rhythm with their racing skills was really important.
“It was just a good solid effort by everyone. We had a mixed night; some of the swims were good, obviously since we broke seven or eight of the meet records. At the same time we need to be and are capable of being much better.”
The gray also took the 200 medley relay with the team of Zimmerman, Keanu Stevenson, Schnur and Zach Holmes. The scarlet, however, finished the night strong with a first-place showing in the 400 freestyle relay with newcomer Josh Fleagle, Michael DiSalle, Alex Miller and Zach Birnbrich.
Friday evening marks the beginning of a full weekend of alumni events for the men’s squad. The current Buckeyes will return to McCorkle to take on former team members in the annual Alumni vs. Varsity meet at 8 a.m. Saturday.
“This is just a fun weekend,” Wadley said. “We have about 150 to 180 alumni members back, that is really exciting. We’re going to dinner with them tonight, then tomorrow we have a big day starting with the Alumni vs. Varsity meet bright and early.”
