Phillips Breaks B1G Record at NCAA Championships

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Records fell Friday evening in Austin, Texas, as the Ohio State men’s swimming and diving team competed on the second day of action at the 2014 NCAA Championships. Led by a Big Ten record-breaking performance from All-American Tim Phillips, the Buckeyes climbed to 19th with 36 points earned.
Competing in the 100 butterfly event, Phillips qualified first in prelims with a mark of 45.18. Moving onto finals, the Vienna, W.V. native once again stole the spotlight with a Big Ten record-breaking time of 45.10 for third. With the final, Phillips earned All-America recognition.
Junior standout Michael DiSalle also represented the Buckeyes well with an 11th-place showing in the 200 freestyle. He brought home honorable mention All-America honors with a time of 1:34.21. Sophomore Josh Fleagle just missed out on a spot in the finals, swimming a 1:34.55 in prelims for 17th place.
In relay action, the 200 medley relay of Garrett Trebilcock, DJ MacDonald, Phillips and Fleagle placed 19th in 1:26.16. A senior this season, Trebilcock competed in the in 400 individual medley as well, touching 29th in 3:47.72.
Ohio State competed to a 16th-place finish in the 800 freestyle relay event; Fleagle, Steffen Hillmer, Rowan Williams and DiSalle all took to the pool for the Buckeyes. The quartet touched in a time of 6:23.42 in finals, earning honorable mention All-America honors .
The 100 backstroke competition completed with Buckeye Connor McDonald placing 27th in 46.90, while Trebilcock followed closely in 38th with a time of 47.38.
The meet will concluded tomorrow (Saturday) with prelims beginning at 11 a.m. CDT. Finals will once again commence at 7 p.m. CDT.
