The Ohio State men’s swimming and diving completed its first day of competition at the 2013 NCAA Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships Thursday at IU Natatorium in Indianapolis, Ind. Entering the meet as the 13th-ranked team in the nation, the Buckeyes are currently in 14th place with 22 total points.
OSU kicked off finals in record-breaking fashion with a ninth-place finish in the 200 freestyle relay. Dropping a new Ohio State varsity record time of 1:17.69, the upperclassmen contingent of Jason Schnur, Zach Birnbrich, Zach Holmes and Tim Phillips recorded the seventh-fastest time in the nation this season while picking up 18 points for the team effort. With the finish, the group was also merited with honorable mention All-America recognition.
Continuing the Buckeye relay momentum, the 400 medley relay qualified for the consolation finals as well. With a 15th-place finish in a time of 3:10.17, the group of Garrett Trebilcock, Keanu Stevenson, Phillips and Schnur received honorable mention All-America honors to bring Ohio State’s total to eight on the first day of action.
In preliminary competition, junior distance specialist Alex Miller earned a 25th-place finish in the 500 freestyle with a time of 4:19.29. Miller will return to NCAA competition tomorrow as a member of the 800 freestyle relay.
Two Buckeye sophomores – Tamas Gercsak and Steven Zimmerman – competed in prelims of the 200 individual medley. Gercsak touched in 1:45.99 for 38th-place finish, while Zimmerman ranked 54th recording a time of 1:47.42.
In the 50 freestyle, Schnur placed 22nd in prelims with a time of 19.74. Overall, the senior hailing from Cincinnati, Ohio raced five times for the day in three separate events.
Buckeye diver Shane Miszkiel, who will compete in three events over the course of the three-day meet, earned 27th-place after posting a score of 286.85 in prelims on the 1-meter springboard.
Ohio State will return to the 2013 NCAA Championships Friday with preliminary competition scheduled for an 11 a.m. start time. Finals will resume at 7 p.m. and feature championships in the 200 medley relay, 200 IM, 100 butterfly, 200 freestyle, 100 breaststroke, 100 backstroke, 800 freestyle relay and 3-meter dive.
