COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Ohio State men's swimming and diving team finished third with 470 points at the 2013 Big Ten Championships Saturday night in Bloomington, Ind. The third-place performance marked the fifth-consecutive year the Buckeyes have finished in the Top 3 at the conference championships.
Michigan won the meet with 899 points followed by Indiana (664), Ohio State (470), Minnesota (378) and Purdue (328) to round out the Top 5. Overall, Ohio State notched one NCAA "A' time and 14 NCAA "B" times in the last session of finals at the championships.
Shane Miszkiel was named a first team All-Big Ten selection, while Zach Birnbrich, Zach Holmes, Connor McDonald, Tim Phillips, Jason Schnur, Keanu Stevenson and Garrett Trebilcock were second team honorees. Miszkiel also was named Co-Diver of the Championships along with Darian Schmidt of Indiana.
Alex Miller began the night with a night with a ninth place finish in the 1650 freestyle with a NCAA "B" time of 15.03.98. Rowan Williams (15.16.32) and Jovan Mitrovic (15.16.48) followed with 13th and 14th finishes, respectively. Both of their times were also NCAA "B" standards.
In the 200 backstroke, Connor McDonald had a solid outing with a four-place finish with an NCAA "B" time of 1:41.86 - just a few tenths of a second off the OSU record. Steven Zimmerman placed seventh overall with an NCAA "B" mark of 1:42.95. In the 100 freestyle, Zach Holmes notched an NCAA "B" time of 43.95.
In the 200 butterfly, Tamas Gerszak notched a fifth-place finish with an NCAA "B" time of 1:43.93. Luke Stirton (1:45.46) followed in eighth, while Garrett Trebilcock (1:46.85) and Ryan Bubb (1:47.91) rounded out the Buckeyes in 11th and 16th, respectively.
In the platform diving finals, Shane Miszkiel, who won the three-meter springboard event Friday night, collected a total of 423.20 points for fourth overall.
The Scarlet and Gray wrapped up championships with the 400 freestyle relay event. The quartet of Jason Schnur, Holmes, Tim Phillips and Zach Birnbrich posted an NCAA "A" time of 2:53.07 for second overall. Ohio State placed in the Top 2 in four out of the five relay events over the weekend.
The Buckeyes will now prepare for their Last Chance Meet to improve their times in order to help qualify for NCAAs. The meet is scheduled for Noon March 10 at McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion.
