Buckeyes Pick Up Three Wins on Senior Day

Columbus, Ohio – The Ohio State swimming and diving program picked up three wins on Saturday at McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion as 22 outstanding seniors were recognized. The 11th-ranked Buckeye women registered wins over No. 24 Virginia Tech (202-98) and Rutgers (239-61), and the No. 17 men knocked off No. 19 Virginia Tech (207-93).

The wins over Virginia Tech for the Buckeyes mark the third and fourth Top 25 wins in the last 72 hours for the Scarlet and Gray. The Buckeyes went down to Tuscaloosa, Ala., on Thursday and grabbed two wins.

Paul DeLakis and senior Liz Li captured themselves a pair of titles in the freestyle events on Saturday afternoon. Li won both of her events in a span of about 30 minutes, winning 50 freestyle first with a clocking of 22.29, and the claiming gold in the 100 freestyle (49.09). DeLakis was a man on a mission that couldn’t be stopped. The freshman from Eau Claire, Wisc., made a statement with wins in the 200 freestyle (1:36.16) and 100 freestyle (44.11). DeLakis then saved up enough energy for an amazing anchor leg that helped Ohio State’s 400 freestyle relay win gold.


 

 

DeLakis split a 43.70 on the final leg of the relay to close it out for the squad of Andrew Loy, Nathan Christian, Matthew Abeysinghe and himself with a group time of 2:56.55. The relays treated the Buckeyes well throughout the day capturing three of the four relays contested. The men’s and women’s 200 medley relays swept gold to kick off the meet. The women’s 200 medley relay was made up of Rebekah Bradley, Hanna Gresser, Li and Freya Rayner to finish with a time of 1:39.80. The men’s 200 medley relay (Mark Belanger, Jack Barone, Michael Salazar and Mossimo Chavez) won their event with a time of 1:27.54.

Gresser turned in a time of 1:01.85 to win the 100 breaststroke; it was her third win of the season in individual events. A pair of seniors, Mark Belanger and Thomas Trace, savored their Senior Day moment with a one-two finish in the 100 backstroke. Belanger touched the wall first in 48.21 and was followed closely by Trace at 49.11.

On the diving boards, senior Stephen Romanik went out on top in the one-meter diving completion with a readout of 361.13. Freshman Lara Tarvit scored a scored a 256.73 for her first-place finish on the platform dive. 

Michigan defeated Ohio State one the men's side by a score of 157-143, and the women Wolverines eclipsed the Buckeyes by a tally of 176-124.
