No. 16 Buckeyes Fall at No. 4 Michigan State
The No. 16 Ohio State men’s soccer team dropped 5-1 match at No. 4 Michigan State Sunday at DeMartin Stadium in East Lansing, Mich. With the loss, the Buckeyes fall to 7-2-1 overall and 3-1-0 in conference play, while the Spartans improve to 8-1-1 overall and 3-0-1 in Big Ten action.

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 6 seed Ohio State men’s soccer team travels to No. 3 seed Michigan State for a quarterfinal match of the 2017 Big Ten tournament at 1 p.m. ET Sunday at DeMartin Stadium in East Lansing, Mich. The winner of the quarterfinal match will advance to the B1G Tournament semifinals Nov. 10 at Grand Park in Westfield, Ind.

SETTING THE STAGE

  • The Ohio State men’s soccer team enters Sunday’s contest with the Spartans with an overall record of 7-9-1 overall and 3-5-0 mark in Big Ten play.
  • Last time out, the Buckeyes fell, 2-0, against Wisconsin Oct. 29 in Columbus.
  • The Buckeyes are the sixth seed for the fifth time in the tournament’s history (1993, 2008, 2013 and 2016). Ohio State is 1-4 all-time as the No. 6 seed.
  • Abdi Mohamed leads the team with 11 points on the year (3g, 5a). Nate Kohl and Joshua Jackson-Ketchup each have seven points.
  • The OSU defense is limiting opponents to 1.24 goals per game. Parker Siegfried is 7-5-1 with a 0.90 goals-against average and seven shutouts in 2017. Siegfried has been named Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week twice this fall, while Jackson-Ketchup was named Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week too.

 

 

BIG TEN TOURNAMENT FORMAT
Michigan clinched the outright Big Ten Conference men's soccer title last Sunday with a 2-1 victory in double overtime against Maryland in College Park, Md., earning them the No. 1 seed in the Big Ten Tournament. The tournament champion will earn the Big Ten's automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament.

Northwestern (6-11-0, 1-7-0 Big Ten) earned the No. 8 seed in the tournament, and will take on No. 9 Rutgers (4-12-1, 0-8-0) in the lone first-round game on Saturday, Nov. 4 in Ann Arbor, Michigan at Noon ET. Michigan (11-4-2, 6-1-1) will host the Northwestern-Rutgers winner in the quarterfinals on Sunday, Nov. 5 at 1 p.m.

Indiana (13-0-4, 5-0-3) claimed the No. 2 seed and will host No. 7 Penn State (5-9-2, 2-6-0) in Sunday's quarterfinals live on Big Ten Network at 4 p.m. The Hoosiers earned the No. 2 seed by virtue of the goal differential tie-breaker with No. 3 Michigan State.

Defending champion Maryland garnered the No. 4 seed in the Big Ten Tournament after posting a 10-4-3 overall record and 5-1-2 in Big Ten play. The Terrapins will entertain No. 5 Wisconsin (8-4-4, 4-3-1) in Sunday's quarterfinals at 1 p.m.

The semifinals and championship match are scheduled for Friday, Nov. 10 and Sunday, Nov. 12 at Grand Park in Westfield, Indiana. The semifinals will be broadcast live on BTN at Noon and 2:30 p.m., and the championship game will be carried live at Noon ET.

BUCKEYES IN THE BIG TEN TOURNAMENT
Ohio State has three previous tournament titles to its credit, taking home the trophy in 2000, 2007 and 2009. In 26 appearances, the Buckeyes are 18-21-2 for the fourth -best winning percentage in the league (.463). Last year, Ohio State earned the No. 6 seed and fell at No. 3 Wisconsin, 3-0, in Madison.

SCOUTING THE SPARTANS
The eighth-ranked Spartans finish the year with a 11-2-3 overall record and 5-0-3 in league play. Last time out, the Green and White battled No. 2 Indiana to a 1-1 draw at DeMartin Stadium Oct. 29. The Spartans finished the regular season unbeaten at home for the second-straight season. Over the last two years, Michigan State is 14-0-4 at home. Offensively, Ryan Sierakowski has 17 points on seven goals and three assists, while DeJuan Jones has 16 points on six goals and four assists. The Spartans have claimed 10 shutouts and are holding opponents to 0.56 goals per game. Goalkeeper Jimmy Hague is 11-2-3 with a .833 save percentage.

Michigan State leads the all-time series, 25-19-3. Last time out, the Spartans defeated the Buckeyes, 5-1, Oct. 1 at DeMartin Stadium in East Lansing.
