Chris Hegngi Named to Hermann Trophy Watch List
Aug. 14, 2012
COLUMBUS, Ohio - Chris Hegngi, a senior forward on the Ohio State men's soccer team, was named to the Missouri Athletic Club's (MAC) Hermann Trophy Watch List, as announced by the NSCAA prior to the team's first exhibition Monday. Hegngi is the reigning Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year and one of two players from the conference to begin the season on the Watch List. In all, 42 men were named players to follow this season.
"Chris had an exceptional junior season," John Bluem, Ohio State head coach, said. "After leading the conference in scoring last season, I think this recognition is a testament to how much talent that takes in the Big Ten. All the pieces are certainly in place for him to have continued success in his final season as a Buckeye."
This is the third time an Ohio State player has been named a Hermann Trophy candidate and the first offensive selection. All-Big Ten goalie and current Columbus Crew keeper Matt Lampson started the 2011 campaign as a candidate, while Eric Brunner, a senior on the 2007 NCAA College Cup runner-up team, was a watch list selection at the start of that record-breaking season.
The MAC Herman Trophy is the highest individual award in intercollegiate soccer presented annually in January during a banquet at the Missouri Athletic Club in St. Louis. Each list will be narrowed down by NSCAA members from Division I programs to 15 semifinalists by Nov. 29. Member coaches and fans will then vote for their top three choices and the finalists will be announced Dec. 6 with the winners announced at the awards' banquet at the Missouri Athletic Club Friday, Jan. 11.
Thirty-two NCAA Division I schools throughout the United States are represented on this year's men's Watch List. The group includes four 2011 semifinalists: senior forward Ashton Bennett (Coastal Carolina/Claredon, Jamaica), junior forward Mark Sherrod (Memphis/Knoxville, Tenn.), senior forward Yannick Smith (Old Dominion/Hillsborough, N.J.), and junior forward Gyasi Zardes (CSU Bakersfield/Hawthorne, Calif.).
Hegngi and the Buckeyes defeated Duquesne, 2-1, in exhibition action Monday afternoon with the senior forward scoring the Buckeyes' first goal. They will play Duke Friday evening in a second preseason match before opening the regular season at Dayton at 7:30 p.m. Aug. 24. The home slate commences against UIC at noon Aug. 26. Admission to the game, and to all regular-season home games this season, is free.
