COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Ohio State men’s soccer team and Columbus Crew will renew their annual exhibition meeting in the 11th Annual Connor Senn Memorial Match at 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 1 at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. The event raises awareness for sudden cardiac arrest in athletes with proceeds benefiting the Connor Senn Memorial Fund and the Dorothy M. Davis Heart & Lung Research Institute at the Wexner Medical Center. Tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for children/students and can be purchased online through Ticketmaster on OhioStateBuckeyes.com or by calling 1-800-GO-BUCKS.
On Sept. 26, 2001, Connor Senn, a freshman on the men’s soccer team, collapsed on the field during the Buckeyes' game at Akron and died that evening from a congenital heart defect, a condition virtually undetectable a decade ago. The Connor Senn Memorial Fund was quickly established by Dr. Lance Senn, Connor's father and a former member of the Ohio State tennis team, with it expanding over the last decade to subsidize a fully-endowed scholarship at Ohio State and now to begin an educational symposium on sudden cardiac arrest.
Within the Ohio State squad, Senn's memory lives on among players who were just in grade school 11 years ago and never knew the source of inspiration behind so much of what they play for. His No. 22 locker remains empty, untouched and locked, and in the corner of the locker room hangs the chair from a teammate's house he would often sit in to play the guitar, covered in messages written by members of the 2001 team. The team's mantra, "Play Like Connor Today," remains prominently displayed and has since carried the Buckeyes to eight NCAA Tournament appearances and a combined five Big Ten regular-season and tournament titles in the last decade.
The exhibition match, which has featured Ohio State vs. the Crew in nine of the 10 years, has been the primary source of financial support for the Memorial Fund, but now is part of a much larger event. Announced last year, the Connor Senn Memorial Fund board has formed a partnership with the Dorothy M. Davis Heart & Lung Research Institute to create The Connor Senn Memorial Symposium on Sudden Cardiac Arrest.
A week after the match, on May 8, Ohio State Head Coach John Bluem, along with Crew President & General Manager Mark McCullers and defender Danny O’Rourke, a childhood friend of Connor’s, will join a dozen top cardiac health experts to speak at the first Connor Senn Memorial Symposium. This is a new program devoted to the topic of sudden cardiac death, educating the medical community and the general public on the scope of the problem, sharing the latest advancements in diagnostic imaging and testing and promoting proper training in the interpretation of young adult electrocardiograms.
The symposium will take place from 8 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. at the Ohio Union (1739 N. High St.) and there is no fee for members of the community to attend.
