David Tiemstra Selected in MLS Supplemental Draft by San Jose
Jan. 17, 2012
COLUMBUS, Ohio - David Tiemstra, a 2011 captain of the Ohio State men's soccer team, was selected in the 2012 Major League Soccer (MLS) Supplemental Draft held Tuesday from the league's offices in New York. Tiemstra, a two-time Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year, was taken by the San Jose Earthquakes, with the sixth pick of the third round.
Tiemstra led an Ohio State defensive crew which allowed 20 goals in 18 regular-season matches during the 2011 season, including just seven in the team's six Big Ten contests. Also a First Team All-Big Ten selection, he started all but one of his 78 career games at center back, while also adding six goals and an assist during his career.
A native of Clarendon Hills, Ill., Tiemstra is the 14th Buckeye player to be taken in the Major League Soccer draft since 2003. He joins Matt Lampson in the professional ranks after the junior goalkeeper was signed by the Columbus Crew in December to a multi-year contract as the club's second Homegrown Player.
