EVANSTON, Ill. - The Ohio State men's soccer team fell 1-0 to Northwestern Sunday afternoon at a rain-soaked and windblown Lakeside Field in Evanston, Ill. The Buckeyes dropped to 5-8-1 overall and 0-4-0 in the Big Ten with the loss, while the defending Big Ten champion Wildcats improved to 9-2-2 on the season and 3-0-0 in conference play.
Eric Weberman scored the lone goal of the contest, burying a free kick from 40 yards out in the 35th minute. Seven OSU players produced shots in the contest, led by two from senior captain Austin McAnena.
"Northwestern played very well defensively today and we weren't able to push through," John Bluem, Ohio State head coach, said. "It was a crummy goal to allow, but that has been the story with too many of our close games this year. I thought the guys battled well in the poor weather conditions though and put up a good effort."
Weberman's goal came after a foul was called on Ohio State 40 yards out from the goal, near the right sideline. His shot curled into the box and, as both teams tried to gain control, the ball bounced at the 6-yard box and kicked up into the top left corner.
Trailing 1-0 out of the intermission, the Buckeyes picked up their pressure in the second period. They earned three-consecutive corners beginning in the 51st minute, but the attempts ended with a shot from Louie Berra being stopped by Wildcat goalkeeper Tyler Miller. Another flurry of opportunities came in 80th minute, but both Zach Mason and Joshua Breto's shots were foiled by Northwestern.
The Wildcats finished atop the shot count, 9-8, while the Buckeyes took a 4-2 advantage in corner kicks, including one with two minutes remaining on the clock. Alex Wimmer made five saves in the match, while NU's Miller stopped three attempts.
Ohio State has each of its next two contests at home, welcoming Wright State at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 19 and No. 3 Akron at 8 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 23. Admission to both games, and to all regular-season home games at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium, is free.
