COLUMBUS, Ohio - Louie Berra had a goal and an assist to lead the Ohio State men's soccer team to a comeback win at San Diego State, 2-1, Sunday afternoon at the SDSU Sports Deck in San Diego, Calif. With the win, the Buckeyes improve to 2-3-1 on the year, while the Aztecs drop to 1-2-1.
Joshua Breto joined Berra in the box score with his first score of the season, equalizing the match late in the first half of play.
SDSU struck first with Kody Duff finding the right side of the net off assists from Morgan Sacco and Tyler Smith late in the 41st minute, but the Aztec advantage was short-lived. Just under two minutes later, Berra found Breto about 10 yards out along the left side and the senior forward was able to direct the shot inside the far post for a 1-1 score.
The score remained tied for the next 21-plus minutes of game action, despite a 4-1 shot advantage by SDSU during the span. Adam Gorski started off the play that ended with the game-winning goal by sending the ball to Berra, who sent his shot across the cage into the lower left 90 from about 12 yards out late in the 64th minute.
SDSU fired off 11 more shots down the stretch, but Alex Wimmer came up with three critical saves to keep them finding a second score. Wimmer finished his third start of the season with six saves, while his Aztec counterpart Blake Hylen made three.
The Aztecs out-shot Ohio State 26-11 on the day and had an 8-4 advantage in corners.
The Buckeyes will have just one game next week, a Friday night tilt against DePaul at 7:30 p.m. in Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium in Columbus.
