COLUMBUS, Ohio – Denio Leone scored his first career goal to lead the Ohio State men’s soccer team to a 1-0 win over SMU Sunday afternoon in the Holiday Inn City Center Golden Hurricane Classic at the Hurricane Soccer and Track Stadium in Tulsa, Okla. The Buckeyes improve to 2-2 on the season, while the Mustangs drop to 0-4.
Leone, a senior forward, is in his first season on the Buckeye roster. He is one of two players, along with junior Ryan Ivancic, who spent their college careers on the OSU club team and playing with the Buckeyes during the spring before donning the scarlet and gray this season. Both have tallied a goal within the first four games of the year and have helped in first-year players in accounting for 11 of the Buckeyes’ 15 total points.
Leone’s goal Sunday came in the 76th minute of action off an assist by freshman Tyler Kidwell. Kidwell, a Dublin, Ohio, product, crossed the ball from the right side to Leone, who one-timed it from eight yards out for the score. The shot was one of just two Ohio State produced on the day, the other by Alex Harrison in the first half.
SMU, conversely, tallied 10 shots, including eight in the second half. Alex Ivanov finished with six saves in goal en route to earning the team’s second shutout of the year. Within a 22-minute of the second half, the Mustangs produced seven shots with Ivanov stopping four.
The Buckeyes return to Ohio, but remain on the road for an in-state contest at Bowling Green at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 13. The matchup is the first of four-consecutive and five overall games against teams from the state of Ohio. The Falcons are 1-2-1 after dropping games vs. Marquette and at Milwaukee this weekend. The Falcons were outscored 5-0 between the two games. The Buckeyes will be home for back-to-back games against Wright State and Dayton on Sept. 17 and 20, respectively.
