COLUMBUS, Ohio – Alex Ivanov stopped two penalty kick opportunities in the second half to cement the Ohio State men’s soccer team’s 2-0 win over Northern Illinois Sunday afternoon in the eighth annual Wolstein Classic on Bert L. & Iris S. Wolstein Field at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. Alex Harrison and Ryan Ivancic each scored their first OSU career goals as the Buckeyes moved to 1-1-0 on the young season and earned a second-place finish in their early-season tournament.

UNC Wilmington won the Wolstein Classic with a 2-0-0 record, while the Huskies (1-1-0) and Cincinnati (0-2-0) took third and fourth place, respectively.

“I was really proud of the way the team bounced back after the loss Friday night,” John Bluem, 17-year Ohio State head coach said. “Both goals came on really well-orchestrated opportunities, which was encouraging to see. We certainly have a lot to work on and need to continue to get better, but it always feels good to get the first win of the season.”

The Huskies controlled the tempo for much of the first half, but the Buckeyes were able to capitalize when it mattered most. Their first goal came late in the 31st minute off a header by Harrison, a senior transfer from Pittsburgh, following a free kick by Sage Gardner. The ball was served in from just outside the right edge of the penalty area for the 6-foot-2 Harrison to drum in from the left side for the 1-0 advantage that the Buckeyes would hold through the intermission.

Northern Illinois had the first of several opportunities to equalize in the 63rd minute when it drew a penalty kick opportunity. James Stevenson took the spot kick, but Ivanov got down low to make the save and the Buckeye defense cleared the deflection back into play.

Less than 10 minutes later, the OSU keeper started the forward motion which led to Ohio State’s two-goal advantage. Ivanov pushed the ball back into play with another save and 48 seconds later, Ivancic scored his first career tally as a junior who spent two years with the OSU club soccer program. Christian Soldat played the ball out to Alex Bujenovic along the left side of the penalty box and the sophomore midfielder worked the ball free to find Ivancic at the far post with 17 minutes remaining.

In the final 10 minutes of action, the Huskies hit the post and crossbar and had a second PK chance thwarted by Ivanov. Late in the 82nd minute, the junior from Strongsville, Ohio, stopped the shot by Issac Kannah and collected it off the bounce to stymy further chances off a rebound.

Ohio State trailed in shots (18-8) and corner kicks (8-5). Ivanov finished with six saves, including four the second half, while his NIU counterpart Miles Herbert made just two.

The Buckeyes return to action in the Hurricane Classic next weekend in Tulsa, Okla. Ohio State will face host and ninth-ranked Tulsa at 8:30 p.m. ET Friday before meeting Southern Methodist at 1 p.m. ET Sunday.
